[Entertainment] Dr Who-ha (IPKat—IP news and fun for everyone)

The IPKat is mildly amused by the coverage of the steps taken by the BBC against any anonymous online knitting affectionado (see the Telegraph's report ). The lady in question created knitting patterns for creating replicas of popular Dr Who baddies, and posted them on the internet. The BBC responded by threatening copyright and trade mark infringement. The IPKat reckons that this has all the makings of a good exam question. What is the copyright position of a person who creates a knitting pattern (presumably a literary work) from a television picture of a CGI character (an artistic work) or a costume (artistic work, or perhaps work of artistic craftsmanship)? And what about the trade mark position of someone who gives away knitting patterns, the results of which, when knitted, may end up on eBay? And that's not to mention passing off... One thing's for sure - in this country, the fact that it may or may not be transformative use won't help you. Merpel, however, can't understand why anyone will willingly spend time knitting models of characters which are meant to be made out of blobs of human fact.

Clairwil : Save The Adipose, Behead The Bean Counters ...
Blah Blah Flowers : BBC Lawyers in 'Acting Like Wankers' Shock ...

blogs : Blah Blah Flowers,Clairwil,House of Dumb,IPKat—IP news and fun for everyone...
(4 posts, last update: 16/05/2008 01:05)

[Entertainment] Hulk smash ... inefficiency! (Gristmill)

By Kate Sheppard Ed Norton will go green -- literally -- next month when he hits the big screen as The Incredible Hulk . But on Wednesday he was on the Hill talking up the virtues of going green figuratively , in our building practices. Ed Norton on the Hill. Norton appeared before the House Select Committee for Energy Independence and Global Warming, along with experts in the green-building field, to talk about why building green is better for the planet and your wallet. Norton is a trustee for the Enterprise Foundation, which works to bring green building practices to low-income housing developments. "The fastest way to make the most progress most quickly on climate change is by reducing energy waste in buildings," Norton told the committee. "The most cost-effective ways to do that are by retrofitting existing buildings, while the deepest energy and greenhouse-gas reductions can be made in new buildings as they come online. Major gains are achievable by applying what we know today." (Norton isn't just a clueless actor, actually. In a 2005 interview with Grist , he spoke intelligently about environmental issues and his own work on green projects.) Also at the hearing was San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom (D), who has been leading a crusade to have his city adopt the greenest building codes in the country . If his plans are approved by the city's Board of Supervisors, all new projects and renovations in the city will be required to comply with the strictest Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards by 2012. The city began fast-tracking permits for developers who voluntarily meet the LEED standards last year. Buildings are responsible for 48 percent of all greenhouse-gas emissions, and it's estimated that 76 percent of all the electricity that U.S. power plants generate each year is used to keep buildings running. Yesterday's hearing was intended to examine the ways that efficient buildings and better building policies can both reduce energy costs and cut their contribution to global warming, and how government policies can support that transition.

FirstShowing.net : More Hulk Smash - New International Trailer! ...
Film School Rejects : New Trailer Shows Mean, Angry Hulk [Summer Movies 2008] ...

blogs : No hay rosa sin espina,Gristmill,FirstShowing.net,Film School Rejects...
(4 posts, last update: 16/05/2008 01:47)

[Entertainment] David Lynch and Werner Herzog Team for Wacky, Guerrilla-style Murder Drama? (Cinematical)

Filed under: Drama , Deals , Mystery & Suspense , Fandom , DIY/Filmmaking , Newsstand I'm not sure what they're putting in the water over in Cannes, but some pretty wild deals are beginning to emerge from that fest in France. Only a day after Werner Herzog signed to direct Nicolas Cage in a remake of Bad Lieutenant comes word from The Hollywood Reporter that Herzog and David Lynch have teamed up on a film called My Son ; a murder drama to be tentatively shot next March. Based on a true story, My Son will tell of a "San Diego man who acts out a Sophocles play in his mind and kills his mother with a sword." HR says the film will jump between the murder scene and this disturbed man's story. Nice family film from two completely sane directors. Additionally, and this shouldn't come as a surprise (considering the two guys we're talking about), My Son will be shot guerrilla-style with digital video. Herzog, who co-wrote My Son with Herbert Golder, will first shoot Bad Lieutenant in July before directing the Victorian-era drama The Piano Tuner for Focus Features. One can only imagine what the finished product will look like when you've got Herzog and Lynch working together on the same movie -- especially one with a nutty storyline like this one. Not for nothing, but I think I'd rather watch the documentary of them making this film rather than the film itself. You?

Britney Spears and her dad Jamie left for Costa Rica today with Mel "SugarTits" Gibson. The Vagina'd One and Braveheart together on vacation? *picks up phone* Hello? Satan? Yeah, it's me. What do you know about Britney and Mel Gibson? Uh huh. Plague of frogs is next, you say? Neat. The Insider reports: Britney arrived on time, about 5 minutes after Mel, and the plane departed at 9:05 a.m. We spotted them leaving on a private plane to the Central American state early this morning. Sources tell us that Mel is taking Britney and her father JAMIE for a mini-vacation. We've learned they will be guests at Mel's home in Costa Rica. I know Mel Gibson loves torture, but this seems a tad overboard. Couldn't he do something a little less abrasive? Like, I dunno, pouring acid on his junk. You gotta start out slow then work your way up to a life-altering evening of "Holy FUCK! Where are her pants?" NOTE : Also, Britney Spears is definitely pregnant. I'm saying it now and as soon as I get a hold of pics I can use without getting my sweet ass sued off, I'll get them up for you guys.

Alex sez, Thomas Denton of comic blog Say It Backwards has a nephew who was diagnosed with cancer. A charity called Candlelighters helped his family out. Thomas decided to use his connections in the comics world to organize some charitable auctions featuring original artwork by various artists to give something back to the organization. Apparently Time Warner (who own DC comics, who in turn own Superman, Batman and most of the cool superheroes who wear capes) objected to the selling of the pieces featuring their copyrighted and trademarked characters on eBay, specifically Superman from what I understand. Using characters owned by the major comic book corporations is pretty common in charity auctions at comic book conventions. This is not to mention that if you go on eBay right now there are a lot of auctions for artwork featuring those same characters, none of which Time Warner seems to be going after. Thomas has posted a statement apologising to everyone involved in the affair (artists, bidders), but it doesn't seem right that he's been left holding the bag for trying to something for sick kids. Some letters to Time Warner's PR department might make them think twice about sending out cease and desist orders so wantonly, and who knows, might even prompt them to kick some cash Candlelighters' way. But this summer's slate of shows is up in the air, thanks to the park being closed indefinitely yesterday after a satellite employed by the United States Geological Survey found high levels of arsenic in its soil. The promoters of the shows are waiting for further testing of the soil, but in the meantime they're asking for donations for future musical endeavors "at Fort Reno, some new venue, or something wholly new."

Filed under: Culture , Fighting If there's one thing we enjoy as much as playing games, it's collecting various odds and ends that reflect our passion for the hobby. Whether it's a Lunar Ghaleon puppet on the mantel or the Varia Suit statue on the coffee table, there is never any question where our loyalties lie. Now UDON Entertainment has added another collectible to our radar in the form of a limited edition art book dedicated to the numerous brawlers who have thrown down in Capcom's storied Street Fighter franchise. The hardcover will feature the artistic styling of such artists as Penny Arcade's Gabe and pin-up style comic cover artist Adam Hughes, among several others . The book is available for pre-order now, with orders placed today dropping you in the running for Capcom's IGN-branded Okami for the Wii. At $80, the book isn't cheap, but really, when it comes to the things we adore, what price love ? And while we have Street Fighter on the brain, we'd be remiss not to mention an interesting blog post over at Camp Capcom, as the company is apparently entertaining the idea of creating a collection of figurines based on the upcoming Street Fighter IV , and as such are looking for input on which characters deserve to make the cut. So, of the faces we know, both old and new, who would we most like to see make the leap from polygons to plastic? E. Honda? Vega? El Fuerte ? Hit up the poll on Capcom's blog and let your voice, albeit anonymously, be heard.
