As we drove around, to and from his vineyards on the hills of the Maremma, Gianpaolo Paglia of Poggio Argentiera and I were talking about the fashion-driven aspects of making wine. How, for example, "traditional" Brunello and Chianti were awful stuff that needed new grapes, vineyard-management and cellar techniques to make the wines drinkable and less hard to sell.

Language is the stuff of thought. I'm reminded of this truism every time I sip a glass of wine and some pretentious snob (usually me) insists on saying something about the Chianti Classico smelling like cherries, or how the New Zealand sauvignon blanc exudes the perfume of pineapple.

2001 was a very good year for Chianti Classico (red label) so when I saw a magnum of this wine for $14, I snatched it up. The 750ml bottle usually runs around $11 and you just don't see the 01's. I was not disappointed except that I should have bought up several more. This wine is perfectly peaked with a touch of browning on the rim. there are cherry notes with baked fruit aromas...

Source : The Wine Cask Blog (subscribe)

Mature garnet hue with pretty cherry aromas with some nice tones of fresh fruit and black cherry. This wine is beautiful on the palate with some sweet fruit and solid, mature structure and balanced throughout. This wine is in prime time drinking mode. I paid $14 for this wine and if you can find it pick up a couple bottles. This is a NICE wine and NICE wine value...

Source : The Wine Cask Blog (subscribe)

Explore : Chemicals, Monsanto

Occasionally, I dedicate this column to one producer. To do it, I need to be continually blown away by a whole portfolio. Some producers are often reliable, but when it comes to making every wine stellar all of the time, only a handful come to mind. Italy's Fattoria Fontodi in Chianti Classico is one.

Source : Examiner (subscribe)

Explore : Cities and Towns, San Francisco

I didn't realize until Mrs. Q came home with a bottle the other day that it had been a few vintages since we had tried it, and that I had never written it up for the blog.
Rocca Delle Macie Reserva Chianti Classico 2004 wine review by (PB) (The Wine Cask Blog)

This previously reviewed wine is always excellent. It is changing over time and for the better; Intense black cherry color with great aromas of fresh wild cherries with hints of wildness and spice and with some air a lovely caraway (rye bread) emerges. This is different than the last time I reviewed this wine. Palate is delicious, fully integrated, drinking great with a hint of chocolate...

Source : The Wine Cask Blog (subscribe)

April is the cruelest month, at least if you’re concerned about the space left on your compact flash card. We’ve just returned from a short visit to the Colli Fiorentini, the hills of Florence Chianti wine region to the west of Chianti Classico, staying at the incredible Le Torre vacation apartments…

Source : http://wanderingitaly.com/blog/rss/ (subscribe)

Explore : INCredible, Record Labels

2004 Castellare Chianti Classico: file this under "whoops" We've had the 2004 Castellare Chianti Classico on our minds ever since tasting it at the Winebow trade tasting of their Italian portfolio. We were impressed by the wine, as was our tasting partner for the day. You can read our write-up here , and our tasting partner's here . Finally, last week, we got it in stock...

Source : domaine547 (subscribe)

Ever since spending a week in Chianti Classico region 10 years ago, I've been a champion of this vinicultural underdog. While the Super Tuscans and Brunello di Montalcinos surged in the 1970s and 1980s, much of Chianti Classico watched and did not do anything to improve the reputation of this important historical area. Others, such as Felsina, Castello di Fonterutoli and Castello di Rampolla,...

Source : Examiner (subscribe)

Explore : Cities and Towns, San Francisco
