A wildfire that flared up last weekend and burned through 8,000 acres of national forest land is now 50 percent contained, but fire crews are concerned that a forecast of warmer, drier weather could spell more problems ahead.

Crews, helicopters battle blaze above Pasadena (LA Times)

Fire began above Hastings Ranch Drive and is burning into the Angeles National Forest, away from homes. A brush fire in the foothills above eastern Pasadena has burned at least two acres as firefighters continue to battle the flames with water-dropping helicopters, according to officials.

I was out and about yesterday in the Salinas Valley. This is the so-called “Basin Complex Fire” that is burning in the Los Padres National Forest. This was taken east of Highway 101 near Chualar looking south, and the hills you see to the right are the Santa Lucia Highlands.

It is amazing that it is just 45 minutes from the desert streets of Grand Junction, the largest flat topped mesa in the world. Grand Mesa National forest is full of evergreens and aspen, lakes and streams. Yesterday temperatures were cool, almost cold, and rain occasionally fell in fat drops. Patches of snow can still be found in the hollows. My friend and I brought back eight nice rainbows....
