About a week ago, I caught a bit of a Chicago Bears pre-season game and, during one of the breaks, I saw a wonderful TV commercial. Wonderful because it is a great conversation piece - especially with the guys. Anyway - watch the video , and remember: The Salem witch trials produced fewer than 25 executions. Most people would be quick to put the number in the hundreds or thousands. If you have links to other witch burning stats, please leave a comment/link.

(2002 depicted) Nose: big round soft berries and poached brandied bear smells (really!) Unique for Merlot but interesting. Oaky vanilla. Palate: huge rich core of peppery cedar. Well balanced with prominent acid and very soft tannins. Finish: vanilla and cherry. Overall: an elegant and subtle Merlot. Unpretentious when decanted and soft on the palate with simple yet elegant flavors. --A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Creative Commons: Attribution - ShareAlike 2.5 applies

Values from DA Chen's Convocation (Blogs for the NC State Community)

One message that I took away from Da Chen's talk was that we are lucky to be born in the United States. Everything here seems to come more easily than in China. One point that Mr. Chen focused on was that Americans are offered the best quality possessions in the world. From clothes, to homes, and cars, only the best are available to us. I know that I will be able to take this principle with me wherever I go. It is so easy to take everything that is available to us for granted. When hearing Mr. Chen talk so passionately about our luckiness, it made me want to give back in some way, maybe through “Service NCState” or through another program. When Da Chen was growing up in China is was very rare for a country boy to be able to attend college. Now, in America, almost anyone can go to college, whether is be a community college, university, or a private college, everyone is given an equal opportunity. Mr. Chen always reiterated the fact that education must not be taken for granted. This concept goes hand-in-hand with my value of education. Education is a major gift to this country, and we (as students) must work hard to keep the opportunity within our grasp. Another concept that Mr. Chen talked about was that we should strive to treat all people equal. It was hard for him as a county boy in a big city to gain the kind of respect he deserved. Although it may be good for people to earn their respect, it is not equally right to give people respects that do not deserve it (just because they were born rich, etc.) People should be treated equally no matter what their background, because the potential for success is there, we just have to work for it. This point makes me want to work harder at my education in the future, to get to know my professors, and in turn reach my goal of receiving my diploma.
