Good for them. They posted that an "academic" called Jenna Delich had posted links to far right websites including Ku Klux Klan supremo David Duke. It's true, she did. They will not be bullied, and good for them. But it does raise issues about English libel law and the cravenness of ISPs. I tend not to share the view that English libel law is wrong because it shifts the burden of proof to the defendant - without it malicious allegations could be much more easily published. My own experience has been slight, but some years ago the New Statesman published a piece saying I was a racist, following a briefing from Mr Salter and then Cllr Howarth. Mr Salter even helpfully sent me a copy of the piece ahead of publication. Libel lawyers Peter Carter-Ruck and Partners got involved at my request and I got an apology and costs, and that was the end of the matter. If this had not happened that allegation would have remained on the record and in the public domain. I know that there are those who object to some of the remarks I make on this blog, such as that Mr Salter claimed £1000 a month from 1997 to 2001 for a non-existent London property. He certainly denied it strongly when approached about it by a print journalist not too long ago. However, that statement is true and truth is a defence in libel. His denial was a lie. Maybe that isn't right, but to say that libel laws should be changed to protect free speech is an over-simplification in my view.
