Zombie apocalypse! Better grab some bullets... and, er, that tennis racket. A great, big festival of incredi-carnage, Dead Rising on the 360 was at the same time a blistering sandbox version of George A Romero's Dawn Of The Dead, and a truly awesome technical showcase for 'next gen' hardware. It was an epic, tense, genuinely funny, ludicrously violent action game that featured more (undead) onscreen meatbags than most games manage to dish up in their entire playthrough. And the best thing about it? Click here to read the full article

the schedule taketh away and the schedule giveth (badgerblog)

*************** Yesterday after I posted my still-in-testing calendar update I received an email that one event I was looking forward to American Zombie: George A. Romero's Film Revolution a weekend-long screening of ten George Romero films organized by a photography and video museum in Charlotte with Romero attending, has been postponed from late September to "an as yet unspecified weekend in February 2009". Reason given is "Mr. Romero has been green-lighted for production on his next new film starting production on Sept. 22nd of this year". Ok. Hopefully the Charlotte people will not schedule this opposite the Ninth Annual Nevermore Horror and Fantasy Film Festival in Durham on 20-22 February 2009. I would like to go to both events, people! *************** However, I also received word that one of my favorite musical projects ever, Delerium , an ethereal goth project of Front Line Assembly (DAMN YOU BILL LEEB! [1]) a) is touring, and b) is playing locally. 2 October - Raleigh - Delerium ( myspace )- Lincoln Theatre Lincoln hasn't updated their site yet, but the show's listed on the band's tour schedule. I honestly thought they'd never tour, and definitely not in my area. And they have Kristy Thirsk with them, who did the vocals on their album _Semantic Spaces_ which is one of my ten desert island music recordings for when I am exiled to Elba. I'm not really sure who could possibly be playing opposite this show that I would skip seeing Delerium for. (Yes, I already updated http://www.ncgoth.com/shows.html with the above two updates.) *************** In other new schedule news from this morning, my friend and SF author Mark Van Name is having a book reading and signing at Quail Ridge Books this coming Wednesday the 27th. I regret I have multiple schedule conlicts and am highly unlikely to attend, but my schedule is not yours and you (and you, and you, and you... [2]) might be free. [1] Old .net joke, sorry. Reflex. [2] Sorry, pay no attention to the badger behind the curtain. [3] [3] For an abrupt segue worthy of Thursday Next, pay no attention *especially* if you're Hamlet.

zombie jamboree (part two) (Planet Grenada)

With the help of Netflix and the bargain bin at Blockbuster I've finally finished seeing the George Romero zombie oeuvre ( Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead plus their remakes, along with the more recent Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead ). In my opinion, the remake of Night of the Living Dead is the best of the lot, followed by Diary of the Dead. I think the original versions of Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead were better than their remakes. (The social commentary is more effectively delivered and I prefer the original "slow zombies" to the new "fast zombies"). Land of the Dead is somewhere in between. To be honest, it was a bit disappointing but mainly because I had hyped it up in my mind (it was the last Romero movie I had left to see and it was a bit hard to find) but still, it was an interesting allegory of the Bush administration (at least that was Romero's stated intention) and in some ways, quite Grenada-esque. To be continued...
