PolitickerOhio reports today that State Sen. Capri Cafaro will be lobbying in Denver to position herself for a run at George Voinovich in 2010: At the Democratic National Convention in Denver, keep an eye on the ambitious and affluent Capri Cafaro, who is expected to use the gathering of party insiders, activists and fundraisers as an opportunity to advance her next political move: a race for U.S. Senate in two years against GOP incumbent George Voinovich. A Democratic insider who is close to Cafaro says that the freshman State Senator is giving strong consideration to a statewide bid. A quibble with Politicker's story. They note that Cafaro is "the favorite to win a full four-year term representing the 32nd district in November." Well, yes. Generally a candidate is the favorite when she has no opponent. If she runs in 2012, she will do so having not won a contested election and having lost after pouring crazy money into two contests. By accounts she is having a decent run in the State Senate, but until she actually wins an election -- with the requisite becoming likable on the stump -- talk of a Senate run is woefully premature.

Our friends over at Public Policy Polling are once again opening the floor for you to suggest Democratic candidates to include in their 2010 Senate match-up polls of Missouri (Kit Bond) and Ohio (George Voinovich). PPP has previously tested Robin Carnahan and Susan Montee against Bond in Missouri, so it'll be interesting to see who they'll choose next. Former Gov. Roger Wilson or Rep. Russ Carnahan, maybe? In the 2010 race against Ohio Sen. George Voinovich, PPP has previously tested Betty Sutton, Tim Ryan, Mike Coleman, and Jennifer Brunner -- all of whom posted competitive numbers. Who should be next? If you feel so inclined, please swing by Public Policy Polling and drop them a note with your suggestions.

McCain Camp Mocks Obama On Inflating Tires: GOP Hot Air Spares Ohio Sen. Voinovich (The Daily Bellwether)

CINCINNATI (TDB) -- Guess who sent an e-mail to Ohioans a few days ago urging proper tire inflation as a "commonsense" step to save energy? The answer -- Republican U.S. Sen. George Voinovich. He said it would conserve gasoline. But if you watch FOX News or read Republican-leaning "news" blogs , you'd think that Illinois Sen. Barack Obama was some kind of environmental extremist for suggesting last week that Americans could cut down gasoline costs by checking their tires. Turns out thatVoinovich -- a former Ohio governor and Cleveland mayor -- is dispensing the same advice. So far, no mockery aimed at him from McCain. Nor NixGuy, the Ohio blogger who said Democrats don't care about ordinary Americans other than "Oh but maybe they should check their tire inflation." Here's Voinovich on the topic of air valves: "Conserve what we already have. If every American took commonsense steps to conserve gasoline such as properly aligning and inflating tires, the country as a whole could lower its fuel consumption by nearly a million barrels a day." Maybe the Republicans ought to retire their attack on Obama. And they might think about checking their wheels. Voinovich's paean to properly inflated tires is in this message he e-mailed about the energy crisis late in July.
