Oarsome leader steers rowers to gold (The Independent)

As the Great Britain rowing squad work themselves like galley slaves at the men's altitude camp at Silvretta in Austria and the women's at Breisach in Germany, they know who to blame. When rowing was regarded purely as an amateur sport dominated by Henley Royal Regatta and the Boat Race, in public perception at least, it brought home the occasional medal. And the nation was grateful. Then a Herculean figure from a comprehensive school demonstrated that not only did you not have to be an Oxbridge-educated "toff" to succeed but he also changed the whole approach at elite level.

Rash and bloody deeds (Best of Both Worlds)

Powerline's " Hindrocket " -- In Great Britain, following decades of increasingly stringent gun control, private ownership of handguns was banned in 1997. And, in fact, there appear to be few firearms in private hands. But the result has not been what was intended. Crime rates in the U.K. have risen steadily, and violent crime has increased alarmingly in recent years. London is currently in the grip of a crime wave, as one brutal, sensational murder follows another. The perpetrators are nearly always young, and the crimes, often unspeakably vicious, are generally of the type conventionally labeled "senseless." The weapon of choice these days is the knife, and British papers are full of discussion of what to do about "knife crime." From this you wouldn't want to conclude that knives have simply substituted for guns to produce a US style crime wave. For example, for the last period measured, 2006/07, England and Wales had 19,157 crimes of "most serious violence against the person" (Table 2.04), of which 755 were homicides. Statistical changes impede a direct comparison with the late 1990s, so evidence of a "crime wave" is tenuous (and the number of homicides is little different, despite population growth). But here's another comparison. You can get to almost the same number of homicides by adding the 2007 murders for Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Forth Worth -- cities with a combined population of just over 5 million people, and therefore less than a tenth of the population of England and Wales. The aggravated assault comparison is just as bad. Knife crime is of course a problem. But it doesn't spin you out of confronting the role that the overall supply of guns plays in driving crime rates in the USA.

Police Puppy Ads Upset Muslims In Britain (NewsBusters)

This week radio host Mark Levin suggested that Westernized culture is collapsing in Great Britain with a story about how Islamic sensitivities are beginning to dominate the culture. From the Fox News website : Muslims in the Scottish district of Tayside are outraged by the appearance of a wide-eyed, 6-week-old puppy on postcards distributed by the local police force, according to the Daily Mail. Postcards showing police dog-in-training Rebel, a German shepherd born in early December, are causing a furor among the region’s Muslims who believe dogs are "ritually unclean," the Daily Mail reports. The cute cards were meant to notify locals of a new telephone number for non-emergency phone calls but instead have become a flashpoint for a clash of cultures. Shopkeepers are refusing to display the offending ad and a Dundee city councilor is calling for an investigation. "My concern was that it's not welcomed by all communities, with the dog on the cards," said Dundee councilor Mohammed Asif, according to the report. The Daily Mail report is here . And LGF called it the "Dreaded Cute Puppy Dog of Blasphemy."

UK Minister Shahid Malik: "British Muslims Targeted Like Jews" (Gateway Pundit)

Shahid Malik-- "We feel like Jews." ( Flickr ) The first Muslim government minister in Great Britain says that British Muslims feel just like the Jews in Europe. ROP and Reuters reported: Muslims in Britain feel like aliens in their own society and say they are targeted like "the Jews of Europe" , the country's first Muslim government minister said. International Development Minister Shahid Malik painted a bleak picture of the integration of 1.8 million Muslims, three years after Islamist suicide bombers killed 52 people on London's transport system. The suicide attacks triggered a debate on whether the policy of avoiding imposing a single British identity, and instead promoting a multicultural society, had led to segregation of ethnic minorities. Malik, who has been the target of race attacks including a firebombing of his family car, said some media coverage "makes Muslims feel like aliens in their own country." "If you ask Muslims today what do they feel like, they feel like the Jews of Europe," he told a documentary to be shown on Channel 4 television next week, marking the third anniversary of the attacks on July 7, 2005. "I don't mean to equate that with the Holocaust but in the way that it was legitimate almost -- still is in some parts -- to target Jews. Many Muslims would say that we feel the exact same way."

The Logic of Knife Control (Power Line)

In Great Britain, following decades of increasingly stringent gun control, private ownership of handguns was banned in 1997. And, in fact, there appear to be few firearms in private hands. But the result has not been what was intended. Crime rates in the U.K. have risen steadily, and violent crime has increased alarmingly in recent years. London is currently in the grip of a crime wave, as one brutal, sensational murder follows another. The perpetrators are nearly always young, and the crimes, often unspeakably vicious, are generally of the type conventionally labeled "senseless." The weapon of choice these days is the knife, and British papers are full of discussion of what to do about "knife crime." Most recently , two French graduate students in biochemistry were tied up, gagged and stabbed a total of 250 times. Their bodies were then set on fire. Police say that the murderer apparently stole two Sony playstations from the victims. The epidemic of violence has gotten so bad that London's Metropolitan Police say that "knife crime," rather than terrorism, is now the department's number one priority: Sir Paul's announcement came after a 16-year-old boy became the eighteenth teenager to die a violent death in the capital this year. There were 26 youth murders in 2007. Shakilus Townsend called out for his mother as he lay dying in a street in Thornton Heath, South London, on Thursday. He was ambushed by masked teenage boys who attacked him with a baseball bat and a knife with a 30cm blade. A young girl with the gang watched his murder. So far, efforts to crack down on knives haven't worked: In May the Metropolitan Police launched Operation Blunt 2, a high-profile initiative to tackle knife crime that involved taking airport-style metal detectors and using special powers to search youths for knives within high-risk areas. ... Sir Paul said: “Sadly, in recent days, more young people have lost their lives to knife crime. This is not tolerable and clearly the message is not getting through.” Police have tried several approaches to reach out to youngsters involved in knife crime: persuasion, coercion and even shock tactics. In May, Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, announced a £5 million package to tackle violent crime, with action to crack down on knives in hotspots across Britain. Every initiative has failed to stop the stabbings in the capital. Of course, banning knives isn't an option in the way that banning guns is. Pretty much everyone needs to own knives for reasons having nothing to do with either crime or self-defense. Beyond that, the world is full of sharp objects and hard objects that can be used as weapons. It shouldn't be surprising that the British government's effort to "crack down on knives" hasn't worked. Maybe they should try cracking down on murderers.

Betrayal. (Better And Better)

232 years ago today in Philadelphia , a bunch of very smart men signed up to declare independence from the Crown monarchy of Great Britain. While their reasons were varied, they were right to do so. But make no mistake-- they were betraying their government. They did so openly, by signing the Declaration Of Independence, but they were nonetheless violating loyalty to the Crown. Betrayal is a dirty, dirty word. There's nothing appealing about it. It absolutely should, to honorable people, create unease. The only time that it's acceptable is when the betrayed has incontestably already betrayed the betrayer. Their action was brave, in that they signed it. Their action was necessary, in that they were at the wrong end of stick, with regard to supply lines, taxation, and rule-making. Their action was correct, in that it launched what is arguably the greatest nation that this world has ever seen. They were right. But they were risking so much, and more than just losing a war. They were risking historical judgment of their actions. We are blessed that they are now considered heroes.
