In the summer of 1995, a group of influential leftist gathered in the home of unrepentant maoist-terrorists William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn in order to hear Illinois State Senator Alice Palmer introduce her hand picked successor Barack Obama. Imagine that scene. Palmer looks at Ayers, then looks at Obama and in her mind perceives no [...]

Even from a distance of a block away from Sen. Barack Obama's home, gates are set up along the street and three bus stops have been eliminated from their route as part of the added security. All of the changes took place this week, as Obama was officially declared the Democratic Party's presidential nominee. CBS 2's Susan Carlson reports.

The End of Evil! (Euangelion)

There is a duality in human beings, they are created for good, but they do evil. How does one set them free from evil, from the evil within themselves! Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (which I read in high school) depicts this struggle to conquer the evil of the human state as the challenge of science. Science, so it goes, might one day find the answer to the cause of evil and find a way to control it and eliminate it. The result in Stevenson's narrative, however, is not freedom from evil but its intensification when humans try to play God. In a tragic irony, Jekyll becomes the very thing that he tries to destroy. Well, Jekyll and Hyde has been made a into musical (with none other than David Hasselhoff playing the lead role). Watch the opening two scenes and note the biblical echoes (e.g. "in the twinkling of an eye") about what it says about human evil and how one might go away in liberating humanity from its clutches. So we learn that science can have a go, but in the end it does not have all the answers. How then do we defeat evil, not the evil of others, but the evil of ourselves? I'm reminded of what Paul says at the end of Romans 7.24-25: "What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!"

In an Aug. 28 NewsBusters post , Ken Shepherd complained that a Chicago Tribune blogger took aim at John McCain's ad complimenting Barack Obama on winning the Democratic nomination and "scoff[ing] at the [McCain] campaign's "Jekyll [and] Hyde" advertising approach , as if the Arizona Republican can't deem it polite to take a one day holiday from criticizing his opponent while planning on vigorously resuming the next day and every day hence until the general election." The problem here is that McCain's campaign didn't take a one-day holiday from attacking Obama, which makes McCain's congratulatory ad a tad disingenuous. It's a nice ad, but let's not give McCain more credit than he deserves.

I suspect by the time the wheels hit the tarmac in Philadelphia, my cynism will return about what this country's electorate will unfold for this country in November. But in this moment -- in the solitude of an emptied suite overlooking workers breaking down the chairs and stage and such on Invesco Field, I am content. I am proud. I am emboldened -- not just by the inspiring words of Barack Obama, but by the collective battles fought by pioneers such as Shirley Chisolm and Jesse Jackson, Sr. -- and lesser know souls like Jewel Miller Rabb, Maurice F. Rabb, Sr., Madeline Wheeler Murphy and William H. Murphy, Sr., my late grandparents who were not alive to see the fruits of their labors in this regard, but nevertheless died knowing that they set the stage for ever-expanding opportunity for their descendants and all Americans regardless of color or creed. Tonight my thoughts are with my ancestors without whom I would not be in Denver and experiencing this moment with the privileges with which I have been so richly blessed.

ChiTrib Swamp Blog: McCain's 'Jekyll & Hyde' Ads (NewsBusters)

With Sen. John McCain plans to run a positive ad tonight congratulating his Senate colleague Barack Obama on winning the Democratic nomination, Chicago Tribune's Mark Silva took the chance to scoff at the campaign's "Jekyll [and] Hyde" advertising approach , as if the Arizona Republican can't deem it polite to take a one day holiday from criticizing his opponent while planning on vigorously resuming the next day and every day hence until the general election: "Senator Obama, this is truly a good day for America,'' McCain says in the ad. "Too often, the achievements of our opponents go unnoticed. So I wanted to stop and say, congratulations. How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. Tomorrow, we'll be back at it. But tonight senator, job well done'' So which is it? "Dangerously unprepared?'' or "Job well done.'' It looks like McCain was against Obama before he was for him. Of course the etiquette of American politics requires some situations to call for polite non-partisan deference, most notable of which are when the losing candidate in a contest concedes victory to his opponent and gives a gracious concession speech, a political fate awaiting either McCain or Obama on the evening of November 4. It may be a bit unusual for McCain to congratulate Obama while spending campaign funds in an advertisement to do it, but evoking, even teasingly, John Kerry's most famous 2004 gaffe to snark at the tactic rings a bit hollow.

One Great Sandwich: Hyde Park Produce's "Anthony's A Ham!" (Chicagoist)

Back when it opened at their new location, we gushed about Hyde Park Produce . Their deli counter doesn’t just have prepared foods, olives, cookies and cheeses. They also make amazing sandwiches on fresh, crusty white rolls. They’re a bit pricey (at $5.99) but worth it; each sandwich is piled high with at least 1/3 lb of meat. Our favorite is the "Anthony’s A Ham" sandwich (and our love only has a little bit to do with the name). Filled with Boar’s Head honey maple ham and Vermont cheddar cheese, it’s topped with lettuce and red onions. The rolls are slathered with a tasty pesto mayonnaise. We can barely finish the entire sandwich in one sitting, and always plan on having a snack left over for dinner. Along with a bag of chips (included in the price) and a giant kosher pickle ($.95), it’s a great lunchtime treat. Hyde Park Produce is located at 1226 E. 53rd Street, in the Kimbark Plaza Shopping Center. They are open from 8AM to 8PM, except on Sundays when they close at 5. There is parking available, but avoid peak hours – they are so popular that it can be hard getting in.
