VP at Imperial Sugar admits that working conditions at the plant where an explosion took the lives of 13 workers earlier this year were terrible. "Shocking" and "disgraceful" are not the sort of words we expect to hear from a corporate executive when referring to his or her own company, but that's exactly what happened at a recent Senate hearing about the conditions at Imperial Sugar. Those descriptors made up part of the testimony of Graham H. read more

A Senate Subcommittee has reviewed testimony from IPSU's Vice President, Graham H. Graham, detailing the plant's condition prior to the explosion. On top of that, the onslaught includes dismal third quarter results. OSHA findings : IPSU CEO John Sheptor's response to OSHA's citations was strong: Complete Story »

Saxby Chambliss Earns His Imperial Paycheck (Air America Radio -)

Georgia Sen Saxby Chambliss - you remember, the guy who stole Max Cleland's seat with rigged voting machines? - has proven (if there was any question about it) that he has indeed been bought and paid for by Imperial Sugar . ITEM 1 : He demanded to be allowed not just to attend the hearing but to challenge the witness ( Graham ) even though he isn't a member of the subcommittee . Chambliss is not a member of the subcommittee. He was invited as a courtesy because he is a Georgia senator, said subcommittee spokesman Matt McAlvanah. He wasn't "invited". He was allowed to attend when he stood outside the hearing room door and threatened to block his bowels until they let him in. ITEM 2: He didn't so much ask questions as do the Old Republican War Dance - berate Graham's testimony, character, and competence (as if Chambliss could do anything except suck the public teat). Chambliss questioned Graham aggressively. He twice said he doubted Graham's sincerity and cut him off before he could answer a final question. Although the Congressional Record has Saxby saying, "I doubt your sincerity, Mr Graham", according to the transcript what Chambliss actually said was, "You're a liar, you liberal friend of al Qaeda. You're a traitor, you're un-American, and you tien your shoelaces from the left side. The Politico is reporting that you have, despite a very healthy income, been late paying your electric bill 3 months in a row! YOU HAVE NO CREDIBILITY, YOU LEFT-LEANING, SCUM-SUCKING SYMP-COM HIPPIE!" He then asked the next question on the list handed him by Imperial Sugar's legal team. read more

Last week, a confluence of events reminded the U.S. public that it's not just the food we eat that's increasingly dangerous in our daily lives—inadequate safety on the job still is killing America's working people. The week ended with two more deaths from construction cranes, this time in Illinois. These fatalities came within days of four deaths due to a crane collapse in Houston—and raises to 18 the number of workers who died from crane-related deaths so far this year, according to an estimate by The Wall Street Journal, which doesn't include bystander deaths.

Senator Saxby Shameless: The Best Senator Corporate America Can Buy (Georgia Politics Unfiltered)

Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss should stick up for Georgia refinery workers, not corporate suits in Texas. You've got to hand it to the corporate lobbyists for the Imperial Sugar Co., based in Sugar Land, Texas. When they give a $1,000 donation to a U.S. congressman from Georgia, they get their money's worth. [Source: Savannah Morning News, "Barton: Saxby does Sugar Land" , July 31, 2008] Of course, Georgia workers can't write Saxby Shameless checks for $1,000 like Imperial Sugar can. So who really expects Sen. Shameless to work for them. Savannah Morning News Editorial Page Editor Tom Barton is not too happy with Saxby Chambliss after a Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing on Capitol Hill Tuesday that left an Imperial Sugar Company lawyer accusing Chambliss of "harassing his client" and attempting to "discredit and blunt" the testimony of Graham H. Graham, a vice president of operations with the Imperial Sugar Company. According to an article on the subject that appeared in the Savannah paper this morning, Graham testified that "he was told by senior executives he was being overzealous in his efforts to make the plant safer." [Source: Savannah Morning News, "Chambliss in sugar furor" , July 31, 2008] The plant Graham refers to is the Port Wentworth refinery that exploded in February of this year killing thirteen people. Imperial Sugar Company, the owner of the plant, faces fines of $8.8 million plus possible criminal charges for alleged safety violations found by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). In a Tuesday ABC News article previewing his testimony, Graham H. Graham said he would reveal to the Senate committee a "failure of his company to address the dangers before the blast." [Source: ABC News, "Executive Turned Whistleblower to Testify on Dangerous Working Conditions" , July 29, 2008] News reports from the Savannah Morning News say that near the end of his testimony, Graham was questioned aggressively by Chambliss. "He [Chambliss] twice said he doubted Graham's sincerity and cut him off before he could answer a final question." Philip Hilder, an attorney for Imperial Sugar, said he thought higher ups at the company fed Chambliss questions meant to discredit Graham's testimony. "He's more interested in discrediting Mr. Graham than discovering the facts, and I think he's the one who's being insincere," Hilder said. And as for Tom Barton, the Savannah Morning News Editorial Page Editor; he ends his editorial by saying that Chambliss, who is up for re-election this year, should stick up for Georgia workers instead of "toting water corporate suits who live four states away." Of course, Georgia workers can't write Saxby Shameless checks for $1,000 like Imperial Sugar can. So who really expects Sen. Shameless to stick up for them.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Imperial Sugar, the Sugar Land, Texas, marketer of sugar under the Imperial, Dixie Crystals and Holly brands, swung to a fiscal third-quarter net loss from a year-earlier profit on 51% lower revenue. The loss was $12.5 million, or $1.07 a share, against net income of $7.6 million, or 64 cents, in the year-earlier period. The loss from continuing operations was $1.07 against profit of 95 cents a year earlier. Revenue fell to $106.9 million from $216.4 million. The current figures reflect a pretax charge of $5.2 million tied to a refinery explosion and fire in February. The year-earlier results include a pretax gain of $6.8 million after the company settled certain arbitration claims.
