The 'original' National Anthem, "Chester" by William Billings - as heard in the grand HBO series John Adams Let tyrants shake their iron rods, And Slav'ry clank her galling chains. We fear them not, we trust in God. New England's God forever reigns. Howe and Burgoyne and Clinton, too, With Prescott and Cornwallis joined, Together plot our overthrow, In one infernal league combined. When God inspired us for the fight, Their ranks were broke, their lines were forced, Their ships were shattered in our sight, Or swiftly driven from our coast. The foe comes on with haughty stride, Our troops advance with martial noise; Their vet'rans flee before our youth, And gen'rals yield to beardless boys. What grateful off'ring shall we bring, What shall we render to the Lord? Loud hallelujahs let us sing, And praise his name on ev'ry chord!

Three people at the center of New Labour brought out their autobiographies recently, Lord Levy, John Prescott and Cherie Blair. I've read the former two, and while I thought Levy's was tedious I was surprised how much I enjoyed reading Prescott's. Often dismissed by comedians and commentators, Prescott reveals his long journey to deputy prime minister from his days as a steward. Ghostwritten by Hunter Davies, the book portrays Prescott as grateful and warm hearted. While he is mostly full of praise for New Labour, he is candid about things that he did not agree with-not including the 2003 invasion of Iraq, which he still regards as the right decision. Prescott is also surprisingly cold towards some of his Labour colleagues. He clearly dislikes Jim Callaghan, once shouting at him "Hey Jim, going to cost us another election, are you?" after Labour were defeated in 1979. He has shouting matches with Neil Kinnock, and implies he did not do enough to support the miners during the 1984 strike, although Prescott is critical of Arthur Scargill. He also stands against Roy Hattersley "on a matter of principle on what the role of the deputy leader should be" in 1987. However, he praises Dennis Skinner, John Smith and Tony Blair, although he makes it clear the latter is not a friend of his. Keen to counter the image of himself as uneducated, he discusses his studies at Ruskin College , Oxford and the hard work he undertook to get there in great detail. He is candid about his hatred of Tories and the media, and also devotes a chapter to his bulimia. I found it rather sad people mocked him for this, and was surprised at some of the people who jumped on this hateful bandwagon. At the end of the book, a number of appendices are included, providing election results for the elections Prescott has helped with (1964, Chester) and fought (1966-2005). All but one of the latter he won. Hunter Davies also provides a summary of Prescott's parlimentary career and the many papers he has written. The last appendix is a rather nice fact file. One could argue that this information should be in the main body of the book, but it is useful and fun wherever it is put. Prescott reads the Guardian and the Independent, while his wife Pauline gets the Mirror. He likes jazz and historical TV, and fish and chips are a favourite of his. You can't deny John Prescott is interesting and has a personality. Though I disagree with New Labour's actions in government and despair at the way national public transport is run, I still liked John Prescott from reading his book. I wonder how much I'd like meeting him in real life.
