There will be more to say about Sen. Jesse Helms, who died yesterday age 86, in the days to come. But for now I’ll just point readers to Joseph Scotchie’s review of Helms’s memoirs, from the Nov. 21, 2005 TAC. Scotchie writes: On Capitol Hill, conservatives had no finer champion than Jesse Helms, the [...]

That a majority on both sides of the aisle not least of them the presumptive nominees for president of both political parties intend to vote for such a violation of Americans' right to privacy and of the sanctity of their personal communications is a stunning surrender to those who want us to live in fear forever . We are living in a time when the right of habeas corpus which simply put is your right to be brought before a proper court of law where the government is made to prove that there is good and legal reason to detain you recently survived by a margin of only one vote at the U.S. ... Somewhere across an ocean and a desert, hiding in his cave, a man of hate named Osama bin Laden is laughing up the sleeve of his dirty robe at the thought that he and a small handful of fellow fanatics could tie a great nation in knots knots of fear stoked by our own leaders. ... How can both men who seek to become our next president cast such a vote when both should be standing shoulder-to-shoulder declaring that they would govern by our consent and with our approval, not by wielding the coercive and corrosive and corrupt powers that King George III and his latter-day namesake from Texas thought are theirs by divine right?

Heart-Shaped Box (Sunset Over Slawit)

There's one piece of information about Joe Hill that no reviewer seems able to avoid. If you've heard of the author at all, chances are it's in connection with this one salient fact. And while I seriously considered writing my own review of Heart-Shaped Box without any reference to Joseph Hillstrom King's famous father... in the end, it proves impossible. Indeed, if Hill really chose his pen name through a desire to be judged on his own merits and not be compared with his dad, he should have chosen a genre other than horror... or become an actor, astronaut, or axle-grinder instead. Heart-Shaped Box is a taut, fast-paced horror thriller. It's the story of former rockstar Judas Coyne, an emotionally damaged rake with a macabre collection - a cannibal's cookbook, an authentic snuff movie... and now a real life ghost, bought from an internet auction site. It's a great high concept idea that takes off at a manic pace, twisting in all manner of interesting directions before climaxing in... well, in a classic Stephen King denouement. There are some genuinely original ideas scattered throughout the early part of the novel, and everything ties together in an emotionally satisfying finale of hope and redemption. Just like daddy would have written. To be fair, for a first novel it's almost as good as anything King Sr. has written in the last ten years... but not a patch on the master at his best. Still, it's a promising beginning. And short of a deal with the devil, daddy won't be around forever. If we do need an heir to the King throne, Joe Hill might just be it.
