Top 25 Powerful Chinese Celebrities 2008 :: RedKemp (Chinalyst - China blogs in English)

Yesterday, Forbes released this list of China???s 25 Most Powerful Celebrities. Rather than debate what it means to be a ???powerful'?? celebrity, here is how Forbes determines it: To generate the annual list of China???s 25 Most Powerful Celebrities, Forbes'?? China bureau surveyed both the earnings and fame of China???s leaders in film, sports, media and publishing. As is the case with the Forbes Celebrity 100, the list is determined by a combined ranking of income and celebrity, or appearances on Web sites, print publications and other media. In this case, Forbes looked at 27 magazines, 27 newspapers and 18 television programs over the course of last year. To qualify, contenders needed to be born and raised in mainland China (those from Hong Kong or Taiwan weren'??t included). And to save you the time of going through the slideshow, I have listed them below. Yao Ming (NBA) Liu Xiang (Hurdler) Jet Li (Actor) Yi Jianlian (NBA) Zhang Ziyi (Actress) Fan Bingbing (Actress) Zhao Wei (Actress) Zhou Xun (Actress) Li Bingbing (Actress) Zhao Benshan (Actor) Gong Li (Actress) Xu Jinglei (Actress) Guo Degang (Actor) Zhang Guoli (Actor) Zhang Liangying (Singer) Huang Xiaoming (Actor) Ge You (Actor) Lin Dan (Badminton) Sun Li (Actress) Huang Shengyi (Actress) Leon Lai (Actor) Lang Lang (Pianist) Zhang Yimou (Director) Chen Daoming (Actor) Yu Dan (Writer)

Approved Olympic Cheers :: Stupid Pig's China Blog (Chinalyst - China blogs in English)

The Official Olympic Cheer The Beijing Olympic Organising Committee’s four-part official cheer is an insult to the Chinese people. Li Ning, president of the Beijing Etiquette Institute, told the Beijing News that the cheer was in line with general international principles for cheering, while at the same time possessing characteristics of Chinese culture. What the hell? Are there general international principles for cheering? How is giving two thumbs up and waving your hands in the air ‘characteristics of Chinese culture’? The creation of these cheers is an attempt by the government to control the Chinese people’s patriotic emotions and love for their country! I think it’ll be great to see a whole bunch of those fat Chinese businessmen strip off their t-shirts and to show off slogans on their bellies while cheering on Liu Xiang and their favorite ping pong superstars. There has to be people who dress up like the pandas or, even better, get like an entire dragon or lion dance squadron going on in the stands. Now THAT would be cheering which possesses Chinese culture. But I guess the reason why they’re only approving certain cheers is because the government is afraid that the Chinese fans would do something embarrassing. Like booing their own athletes if they lose or chanting offensive slogans at opposing teams. It’s happened before at a few football games, so I guess this is some kind of preemptive strike against such behaviors. Even so, I still think it’ll be great to see some Chinese fans painted up like that crazy guy at the Minnesota Vikings football games.
