It was recently drawn to my attention by a good friend that Carmarthenshire County Council has no representation from Llanelli on it’s executive board. Having originated from Llanelli, I know as well as most that Llanelli is by a long way the largest town in the county. Countered with a dying shopping district and industrial decline, I would imagine that now is the worst time for the town to remain unrepresented at county level. This is an unfortunate example but one that shows that the current council structure does not work. It has been a strong belief of mine for a long time that towns should run their selves. Why Llanelli is controlled from Carmarthen is a mystery to me. I know that Ryan commented a lot on this issue while his blog The Llanelli Journal was still running. It’s about time there was a serious review of local government in Wales. I understand that Peter Black AM proposed an LCO before the Assembly whereby the Assembly could legislate on local authority electoral arrangements. I think it was a real shame that he was refused leave to introduce the legislation. On the other hand, I believe we already have the power to introduce the most democratically accountable form of local government through a referendum for directly elected mayors. I understand that where the system has been introduced there has been little change in turnout, but it creates an engaging campaign and it is still early days. Politicians need to win back the trust of people that have been disengaged from politics.

I don't think any season of regional rugby has been straight forward to predict so far. This Summer has seen significant upheaval, with both the Newport Gwent Dragons and Llanelli Scarlets making personnel changes a-plenty. Lyn Jones aside, the Arms Park and Liberty Stadium present a fairly settled picture.
