Valve server hacker finally caught in Holland (Gadgets Future)

Back in April of last year a hacker going by the name of MaddoxX managed to hack into a 3rd party Valve server and steal a load of credit card details from Valve Cyber Cafe users. He then posted a file that contained credit card numbers, transaction histories and Valve’s bank balance – although this was not verified as being correct. At the time MaddoxX responded to e-mails sent by The Register in which he said: I just came accross the login details when I was browsing some stuff. The access to their whole customer database was more like luck, but still a hack because the login details are inside some files. They changed the logins now and made it not possible anymore to get the details from the files. The [credit card] details itself are stored in a MySQL database where I still have access to … It is just to show how lax they are with their security. I want a full excuse from VALVe on their site that they did NOT inform anyone about this. I’ve got several e-mails from cafe owners and they said VALVe hasn’t even said shit to them…so you can see how they treat their customers. It has took over a year, but MaddoxX has now been caught in the town of Maastricht, Holland. It turns out he is just 20 years old and has managed to spend US$20.5 million through buying gadgets and playing poker online. Hacking Valve servers isn’t his only crime. He also managed to hack into Activision and grab a pre-release copy of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and has stolen over 50,000 credit card details from a U.K. ticket selling website, the likely source of his poker habit funds. This guy is in serious trouble not only through the prosecution, but the debts he has accumulated likely using stolen credit cards. He is probably going to get some jail time and a fine he might never be able to pay. Read more at ShackNews.com and ITExaminer.com

Poland and the euro (The Economist)

Poland's cautious approach towards adoption of the euro Poland could begin its final preparations for euro adoption in 2009, by entering the exchange-rate mechanism (ERM2), according to the finance minister. Already Poland is well on the way to meeting the Maastricht criteria. Yet the government is deeply aware of the risks of ERM2, which are greater for Poland than any other candidate country. Hence it is anxious to spend no longer than the minimum term of two years in ERM2 and to eradicate all potential obstacles to graduation before it enters. Speaking on June 20th, Polish Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski said that the country could enter ERM2 in 2009. His statement adds weight to the notion that Poland is seeking to adopt the euro in 2012, as Prime Minister Donald Tusk suggested recently, even though the government has shied away from embracing a formal target. A candidate country must spend at least two years in ERM2 before it can enter the euro area, and only then if all the Maastricht criteria?on public deficits, price stability, long-term interest rates and exchange-rate stability'are met. ...
