As bad as you think the GOP is, why isn't Senator Obama 10 points ahead? I hope you keep thinking that we are too far gone to win. If the Democrates continue to ignore the fact that we are in it to win it, November 2008 will hurt more than November 2000. Senator Obama left the door wide open when he didn't pick Senator Clinton for VP. Poor decision making is no more evident that with that snub of Senator Clinton.

Dilbert and Wally will rejoice: ISO 9001 is being updated for 2008 (Z Trek: Alan Zeichick's Weblog)

There's a new version of the ISO 9001 quality standard coming. The proposed draft, ISO 9001:2008, is an incremental evolution over the previous version, ISO 9001:2000. It should be out in October or November. The ISO 9000 family addresses quality management. There are three big specs in the family, of which ISO 9001 is the biggie: ISO 9000, Quality management systems — Fundamentals and vocabulary. Last updated in 2005, it defines terminology for talking about quality. ISO 9001, Quality management systems — Requirements. This tells you what you have to do in order to have quality in your products and services. ISO 9004, Quality management systems — Guidelines for performance improvements. This tells you how to continuously improve quality. (In case you're wondering, ISO 9002 and ISO 9003 were rolled into ISO 9001 with the ISO 9001:2000 update.) The Dilbert cartoons lampooned many aspects of the ISO 9000 specs, such as an insistence that everything be labeled, and every process be documented . In large part, a company's compliance with ISO 9000 has to do with the thoroughness of its documentation. To put it succinctly: • It doesn't matter if your products suck, as long as you follow well-documented processes to make them. • It doesn't matter if your processes are lame, as long as you carefully measure how closely you adhere to them. What's new in ISO 9001:2008? According to the ISO, not much. ISO 9001:2008 will be the fourth edition of the standard which was first published in 1987. The third edition, published in 2000, represented a thorough revision, including new requirements and a sharpened customer focus, reflecting developments in quality management and experience gained since the publication of the initial version. ISO's rules for the development of standards require their periodic review to decide if they need revising, maintaining or withdrawing. Compared to the 2000 revision, ISO 9001:2008 represents fine-tuning, rather than a thorough overhaul. It introduces clarifications to the requirements existing in ISO 9001:2000, based on user experience over the last eight years, and changes that are intended to improve further compatibility with the ISO 14001:2004 standard for environmental management systems. I can't wait to see what Dilbert and Wally have to say about it! Z Trek Copyright (c) Alan Zeichick

Iran Increases Number Of Centrifuges For Uranium Enrichment (The Huffington Post)

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran has increased the number of operating centrifuges at its uranium enrichment plant to 4,000, a top official said Friday, pushing ahead with the nuclear program despite threats of new U.N. sanctions. The number was up from the 3,000 centrifuges that Iran announced in November that it was operating at its plant in the central city of Natanz. Still, it is well below the 6,000 it said last year it would operate by summer 2008, suggesting the program may be behind schedule. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Reza Sheikh Attar, who visited Natanz last week, said Friday that Iran was preparing to install even more centrifuges, though he did not offer a timeframe. "Right now, nearly 4,000 centrifuges are operating at Natanz," Attar told the state news agency IRNA. "Currently, 3,000 other centrifuges are being installed." The U.N. has already imposed three rounds of sanctions on Iran for its refusal to freeze its enrichment program, which can be used to produce either fuel for a nuclear reactor or the material needed for a nuclear warhead. In the process, uranium gas is spun in a series of centrifuges known as "cascades" to purify it. Lower levels of enrichment produce reactor fuel _ which Iran says is the sole purpose of the program _ but higher grades can build a weapon. The United States and its allies are likely to press the U.N. later this year for a new round of sanctions after Iran did not accept a package of economic and technological incentives in return for suspending enrichment. But they could face strong resistance from Russia after this month's crisis in Georgia deeply damaged ties between Washington and Moscow. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin suggested his country's cooperation with the West on the Iran issue could be hurt by the Georgia tensions. Asked if Moscow might stop cooperation if it comes under increased pressure over Georgia, he told CNN that Russia is "working very consistently and diligently with its partners" on the Iran issue. But "if nobody wants to talk with us on these issues and cooperation with Russia is not needed, then for God's sake, do it yourselves," he said in the interview aired Thursday. Russia, which has close ties to Tehran, has long been reluctant to impose harsh sanctions _ though it backed the past three rounds of limited financial sanctions. The United States and some of its allies accuse Iran of seeking to build a nuclear weapon, a claim Iran denies. Tehran insists it has the right under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty to develop reactor fuel using enrichment. The International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog, declined to comment on the latest Iranian announcement. By reaching 4,000 centrifuges, the program is moving into an industrial-scale program that could churn out enough enriched material for dozens of nuclear weapons. Experts, however, say Iran would need to change the way the centrifuges are operating to enrich uranium to high, weapons-grade levels, something that would be difficult since the Natanz facility is under IAEA video surveillance. Last month, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Iran possesses 6,000 centrifuges, though he did not specify how many were operating. He also suggested that negotiations with the U.N. had raised a possible compromise whereby the enrichment program could continue as long as it was not expanded beyond 6,000 centrifuges. However, the IAEA and the countries involved in the nuclear issue _ the U.S., Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia _ have not shown any public sign that such a compromise was on the table. European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana presented Iran with the incentives offer in June. Iran finally sent a reply in August, but the U.S. and its allies said the response did not directly address the offer and considered it a rejection. The workhorse of Iran's enrichment program is the P-1 centrifuge, which is run in cascades of 164 machines. But Iranian officials confirmed in February that they had started using the IR-2 centrifuge, which can churn out enriched uranium at more than double the rate. Iran says it plans to move toward large-scale uranium enrichment that will ultimately involve 54,000 centrifuges.

Sarah Palin for VP!!! I'm no longer holding my nose in November (Republican Michigander)

Sarah Palin for VP! Great pick by Senator McCain. This is a risky, but high reward pick for McCain. Overall, I'd give it an A- (and four years from now, an A+). I have to give McCain a lot of credit here for having the guts to make his own pick and not one a lot of the establishment was hoping for (Romney). From a personal standpoint, Palin was my 2nd choice.....of EVERYBODY. Mark Sanford was my first and would have been the A+ pick (experience edge), but what this does with me is for the first time ever, really get me to vote FOR somebody for President/VP instead of just voting AGAINST the other people. First, what is bad about this pick? Experience. She has slightly more experience than Obama (although it is EXECUTIVE experience). It is four years two early. That is the ONLY negative. She has 16 years of political experience, (Obama has 12 years total, four in high office counting the last three years he has done nothing but run for president), and eight years in an executive role. In between her time as mayor and governor, she was on the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission until she resigned in protest over poor ethics by some of the bigwigs...including the then state GOP chair of her state. She then defeated incumbent Frank Murkowski to be governor. Eight years of executive experience is not enough to be PRESIDENT (Although it is two years more than Bush and eight years more than Obama), however this is VICE president, and a VP can afford some on the job training. McCain can show her the ropes on what she doesn't know, and her experience in executive office will help her learn quickly. What is GOOD about this pick? Several things. 1. Real change requires real change. Obama talks about change. What has he done in the Senate outside of TALK about change? Absolutely NOTHING but piggyback off of other senators. Obama talks about cleaning up Washington. Palin HAS cleaned up political messes of others. She defeated an incumbent mayor over tax issues, and then lowered property taxes. She resigned from the Oil and Gas commission because of ethics of her own party members. She then ran for governor and took out the trash there. She fought against pork spending and passed an ethics bill. She talked, and then delivered. Currently she's pushing for energy reform in Alaska, including a new Natural Gas pipelines and fighting Congress for not drilling in ANWR to increase our oil supply here at home. 2. Solidifies a fractured base. Fiscal conservatives are important again. After Bush crapped on us for eight years, we have two people with REAL records against pork barrell spending. McCain is decent on this issue, and Palin is great on this issue. McCain has problems with trust among gun owners. Palin alleviates many of those doubts and is the most pro-2nd Amendment candidate on a major ticket since Teddy Roosevelt. You won't hear any "can I get me a huntin' license" types of blunders from Palin. She's the real thing. And on the life issue, Palin walks the walk on being pro-life more than just about anybody (although John McCain's record is quite good on that issue...he's walked the walk too and more than just by voting records). McCain came through for us with this pick. 3. The Outsider. Obama talked about change and gave us a 30 year career hack whose only claims to fame is lifting other speeches, writing a gun grabbing bill, and being a self-proclaimed foreign policy expert (how so anyway'). Outside of political junkies and Delaware, nobody knows who Joe Biden really is. Palin is the only major party candidate not to come from Washington and its 17% approval rating. Washington doesn't change Washington easily. I didn't mention the obvious here that can cut both ways. McCain named a woman to the ticket. How will that play? I don't know. I think it can gain some votes and lose others. It doesn't effect my vote. However she's very easy on the eyes, so I won't be changing the channel on my TV set when she's on there, unlike the normal reaction I have with politicians. That can't hurt. Would I support this pick if Todd Palin was the governor of Alaska with the same record, and if Sarah Palin was the oil rig worker and fisherman instead? Absolutely. I can say that without a shadow of a doubt. I support people who walk the walk in their politics. It is extremely rare, and it is even rarer when one is a governor, and rarest of all when one is tapped to be VP. None walk the walk better than Governor Sarah Palin. That's why I'm no longer holding my nose this November. I'm not just voting against Obama and Biden anymore. I'm voting for Sarah Palin.

I don't usually discuss politics on this blog. There are plenty of blogs for that. I like to consider my humble offering an oasis from the shrill harping of politics. This November held an unavoidable issue though. I had two damned good reasons not to vote for the Obama/Biden ticket. Gun control and socialized medicine. I did not, however, have a good reason to vote for the McCain ticket. Now I have a reason to vote for McCain. Sarah Palin . Governor of Alaska, on the ticket as VP. I came home from work today with Gustav on my mind. Thoughts of evacuees filling the hospital, and the need to provide critical medical and nursing support. I am on call for the usual emergencies this weekend, and on standby for evacuation support, but it is difficult not to raise a glass in support of this decision.

Back at work (Ron Hebron)

I started back to work half time Monday 8/25. My energy is still low, so half time is all I can do. Today I put in 3 hours, then did my exercise and some errands. Then I needed 3 hours rest before I could do the last hour. I will continue part-time work until mid-November when Boeing's short-term leave will no longer provide help. I can now walk with full weight. But I have some pain and limp. (This is the most pain I have had since the day after surgery.) Getting even weight both walking and standing is high priority, so I use one crutch lightly loaded most of the time. I am still doing a bunch of exercises to help with range of motion and obscure little muscles no one knows exist. And for over a month I have been riding an exercise bike every other day at 70 to 80% max heart rate. It feels good to get some real exercise. I am doing everything I can for full recovery. I saw the orthopedic surgeon, but I didn't have my big picture questions ready. He told me no more check ups unless I have problems. So I didn't get to the questions I have been putting off to concentrate on more immediate concerns. - How much will I recover range of motion? - Will I be able to do big bike rides and rough hikes? I realize it's my problem and my recovery is up to me. The exercises the physical therapist has me doing will help with having the flexibility to handle rough ground and such. I just wish I had the road map. Thanks for your prayers and support. Broken pelvis

If McCain loses in November there's no guarantee that Sarah Palin will be a front-runner to secure the GOP nomination in 2012 (though I'd guess she will be a contender). But if McCain wins and, as seems possible, serves just one term then, clearly she would be. Equally, if Obama loses this year there's no certainty that Hillary Clinton will automatically be the prohibitive favourite for the Democratic nomination in 2012 (though that too seems quite possible). But, one way or another, the combination of Hillary's near-miss this year and Palin's presence on the GOP ticket makes me think that it is more likely than not that a woman, even if not necessarily one of these two, will be the Presidential nominee for either the GOP or the Democrats in four years time. With women having come so close this year (whether on merit or not, and good people can disagree on this) I think we will find that there will be increased pressure to put a woman in the top slot next time. One more heave and all that. The momentum is with the ladies. And since married women are a vital constituency I suspect both parties will not...

Lose-Lose for Labour (Miserable Old Fart)

Odd story in yesterday's Scotsman , which has confirmed rumours on a number of blogs over the past few weeks. Apparently Labour intend to hold the Glenrothes by election on: either Thursday, 30 October or Thursday, 6 November for the contest. The November date is the favourite simply because it comes only a day after the expected result of the American presidential election, and if Labour was to lose, party managers believe the bad news would be partly buried by the US coverage. Apart from the fact that a defeatist attitude of defending a seat by preparing to lose it isn't the best tactic to use when entering an election campaign, a victory in these circumstances could also backfire. With a 28% majority and no accounting for what events might throw up over the next ten weeks a Labour hold is not inconceivable, whatever the bookies might say. If Labour was to hang on, even by the skin of its teeth, it should be the beginning of Labours fight back; it should be Labour halting the advance of the SNP / the Tories, it should be the beginning of the new beginning for Labour. But what if that message got buried in the coverage of the US presidential election? The knives would still be out for poor Mr Brown and his advisers :-)

Last November, we acquired a beautiful moggy called Max. His previous owners tragically died in a car accident. We don't think he was given much affection, as he was rather jumpy, but now he's a part of our family. I am worried when we go on holiday all my good work will go to waste as we have to put him in a cattery for a week. Will this set him back in his rehabilitation?
Possible Confirmation On Lich King Release Date (GayGamer.net)

Well it looks like we're narrowing in on the official release date for Wrath of the Lich King . Over the course of the last week or so, most of the online retailers have quietly updated their ship dates to November 4th. With the upcoming 3.0 patch apparently hitting public test servers in the near future, that would line up pretty well, based on how the previous expansion was launched. Of course, Blizzard could delay the whole thing if they decide it's too buggy or they want to revamp content. But it's nice to have a more accurate estimate. Online retailers point towards a November 4 release for Wrath [WOWInsider]
