Who needs Tiger? This British Open leaderboard has juicy nuggets galore (Brandon Tucker)

Maybe Tiger should sit out more majors. Okay, not really. But c’mon, this leaderboard at Royal Birkdale is one of the most intriguing in years. Just when you thought this year’s U.S. Open was the greatest sports event in the history of homo sapien competition, the British may offer up its own classic - albeit a 180-degrees different. Except for Rocco, of course. Talk about a throwback leaderboard. Look beyond Greg Norman (man, I need to marry a tennis pro. Is Anna K. still on the market'), and the story lines are endless. The golf writers at Royal Birkdale are getting fat juicy steaks plumped down on their laptop every 15 seconds. Thankfully all this bogus “asterisk” talk is long, long gone. Padraig Harrington was written off after a wrist injury suffered recently, but here he stands above the fold (which makes Phil Mickelson’s whining at Oakmont last year all that more wimpy - no wonder Phil’s not cut out for links golf). David Duval is talking about being just a few bounces away from getting his place back among the world’s best golfers. But I’m most intrigued by Jean Van de Velde. If anyone ever deserved a sportsmanship award, it was Van de Velde last year when the Open returned to Carnoustie and was asked to conduct countless interviews recollecting his immortal follies from 1999. What made it even worse for the Frenchman, is his health was deteriorating and many wondered if he would ever play competitively again, suffice to say qualify for a British Open. But here he is, five off the lead after a solid 71. He stands even with Adam Scott, one better than my pick, Sergio Garcia , and is just a few holes away from being in serious contention - all while world powers Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Vijay Singh are afterthoughts. Els and Singh are out of the tournament completely. Let’s look at the leaderboard a little closer: Camilo Villegas is picking up where Andres Romero left off last year. What’s with South Americans and their penchant to go on ridiculous birdie streaks? Justin Rose, at 6-over, has to be one of the biggest disappointements of the tournament. Sure, he’s not out of it. But anything short of a Top Ten is going to draw some serious criticism from the home country media - after he finished 4th here as a pimple-popping teen a decade ago. Norman, Mediate, Duval, Van de Velde (not to mention Michelle Wie threatening to win her first golf tournament on the LPGA this week)…Frankly, I’m waiting for the scorers to announce John Daly actually shot a 59, not 89 today, making him tied for the lead with K.J. Choi. It wouldn’t surprise me. Not this week.

Shirdi Sai Baba idol ‘opens’ eye (New Leaf)

Hundreds of people descended on a merchant's house in Bangalore on Friday (19th July 2008) to witness what they believe is a miracle - the Shirdi Sai Baba idol is purported to have opened its left eye. After reports of Ganapati idols drinking milk and the recent story of a bleeding Christ, the Sai Baba 'miracle' too saw both the devout and the curious rushing to the house. The famous Shirdi Temple is located at a distance of 260 km from Mumbai in Maharasthra at Shirdi, but lakhs of devotees adore Sai Baba idols at home and worship the lord. A few years ago, television channels, radio and newspapers eagerly covered a unique phenomenon called Lord Ganesha drinking milk offered by devotees in Mumbai and other parts of the country. Even sceptical journalists held their milk-filled spoons to the statues of gods - and watched as the milk for the Thursday puja. The devotee couple Babu (45) and his wife Lakshmi took the marble idol to clean on Wednesday evening to prepare for the Thursday puja. Surprised at the one-foot high marble idol with one eye open, the house owner Babu said the he was blessed by the Lord. The idol had some black mark on its left chin and the couple's son Dhrupad, who was cleaning the eye, suddenly felt some change in the idol - the eyelash seemed moving. The devotees were astounded and stopped the cleaning work. On Thursday morning, they found the left eye of Baba had opened. Thursday being a day to worship Baba, the couple, along with their neighbours, performed puja. The news flashed on Friday morning and by afternoon, the crowds multiplied. The police have been posted at the house to control the crowd.

Policy for Open Science - reflections on the workshop : One thing that was very clear to me was that the attendees of the meeting were largely disconnected from the more technical community that reads this and related blogs. We need to get the communication flowing in both directions - there are things the blogosphere knows, that we are far ahead on, and we need to get the information across. There are things we don't know much about, like the legal frameworks, the high level policy discussions that are going on. We need to understand that context. It strikes me though that if we can combine the strengths of all of these communities and their differing modes of communication then we will be a powerful force for taking forward the open agenda.
David Duval in Contention at British Open (ARMCHAIR GOLF BLOG)

(Honeyfield/Flickr) I WAS JUST TRYING TO GET USED to Greg Norman being in contention at the British Open, someone who now plays more tennis than golf, when another ghost from golf’s not-too-distant past appeared on the British Open leaderboard. David Duval? Is that you? Are you kidding me? This is like a British Open funhouse where you stare into the TV screen and everything is distorted. Former world No. 1 Greg Norman, a 53-year-old newlywed who considered this a tune-up for the Senior British Open, is one shot off the 36-hole lead held by K.J. Choi. Then there’s Duval, who had made one cut in 12 events coming into The Open Championship. If Duval’s opening 73 on a foul weather day wasn’t surprising enough, he backs it up with a nifty little 69. Can anybody tell me what’s going on here? Am I in some sort of alternate golf reality? Are my TV and Internet playing tricks on me? I was getting ready to leave this afternoon when I spotted Duval on the closing holes of his second round. I stuck around. I had to see this. Wearing wraparound shades on a gray, misty day, it was the same David Duval, an expressionless and robotic golfer. Only he’s bulked up in new places. There he was saving pars out of pot bunkers and thigh-high rough. I blinked. He was still there. First-round leader Rocco Mediate is still hanging around at plus two. Phil Mickelson rebounded with a 68 after an opening 79. Lefty will be around for the weekend, but I don’t see him getting back into this thing. But who knows in this bizarre British Open? Unlike Sandy Lyle, who walked off the course during round one when he was 11 over par, John Daly completed his disastrous second round, an 89. If anybody thought golf couldn’t be interesting without Tiger Woods, they might want to tune in this weekend. −The Armchair Golfer Related: 2008 British Open TV Schedule
