Richard Grayson, author of Summer in Brooklyn and Who Will Kiss the Pig: Sex Stories for Teens heard Pete Hamill read from his new novel, North River, at the Park Slope branch of Barnes and Noble last week. He files this report. Dr. Bob Wolk, the psychologist whose office in Concord Village we used to go to every week in our late teens, once told us he'd appeared on a TV talk show with someone he described as "a fine young man" - at least that's what we wrote in our 1970 diary. One of the first stories we ever wrote that got published (in Transatlantic Review) begins with these four words: "Somebody like Pete Hamill. . ." Except there's nobody quite like Pete Hamill. Pete Hamill is still a fine young man, as well as an amazing writer whose early career was a touchstone for us growing up. We devoured his newspaper columns, magazine articles and everything else we could find by him. Pete Hamill provided proof to us that, yeah, you could grow up in Brooklyn and be a writer someday. Last night we were lucky enough to have enough sense to go out in the rain to...

Who Would You Want to Hear Reading the Classics? (MediaBistro.com)

Hearing Richard Russo read a one-minute excerpt from Huckleberry Finn for "Moving Paragraphs," a new video series from Barnes & Noble Studio got me to thinking: If I was producing a series of short animated films with A-list authors reading bits from great literature, who would I go to next? So far, sticking to American writers and American fiction, I've come up with Chuck Palahniuk on "The Tell-Tale Heart," Joyce Carol Oates taking a scene from The Scarlet Letter , and James Ellroy dipping into Red Harvest . Also, I'd be curious to see what David Mamet made of fellow Chicagoan James T. Farrell , but I didn't quite get to the level of picking out a particular passage. Anyway, I'd love to find out the pairings you would come up with—for one thing, I know there's a lot of great opportunities involving poetry that I'm not catching because my mind's not sharp enough at this hour.
Creative Futures Bursary Project: Roel Wouters (CR Blog)

For almost 20 years, Creative Review has been encouraging the next generation of talented creatives through our annual Creative Futures scheme in which we celebrate the promise of a selection of emerging talent in visual communications. This year’s crop of Futures were selected by the CR editorial team – our only criteria were to find individuals or teams who we feel have an extremely bright future ahead of them and who are indicative of the future direction of the industry. Just before Christmas, each of our selected Futures gave a talk at one of three Creative Futures events. We invited everyone coming along to the talks to bring a piece of work with them – an image, some text, even a piece of music. We then asked each of our Futures to produce a new piece of work responding to the experience of being selected for the scheme, giving their talk and to the work brought along. These projects were funded by a bursary provided to each Future by CR and PlayStation. Over the next week or so we will be posting up the resulting pieces of work plus documentaries on each Future, made for us by Fallon...
