Cheap Entertainment (HolyCoast.com)

If you want some cheap entertainment, go to the Target Store in Rohnert Park, CA on opening weekend at nearby Sonoma State University. The store was jammed with college students and their parents looking for all the stuff their kid (mostly freshmen on Saturday) need for their new dorm room. The supplies of bottled water were completely cleaned out, as were the coax cables for TV sets and the ethernet cables for computers. We couldn't even find a doorstop. Most of the plastic drawer organizers were also gone. And, I must have seen 20 different people buying those mirrors that hang on the back of a door. Target must absolutely love this weekend.

What a Long Day (HolyCoast.com)

It's only 6:30 pm and I'm beat. An 8 hour+ drive to Rohnert Park (it normally takes about 7 hours, but traffic and a few issues with the suitcases strapped to the roof slowed us down). However, we got lucky. The opening weekend stuff for Sonoma State says freshmen check in on Saturday and returning students on Sunday. We didn't think we'd be able to move our daughter in today. However, it never hurts to ask, so when we finally got to the school at about 3 we stopped by the check-in and in 2 minutes we were on our way with room keys and everything we needed to start unpacking. That will save us much trouble tomorrow. Since then (besides eating "linner") we've been unpacking stuff, setting up the electronics and trying to find a place for everything in a very small room. She's the first of four suitemates to arrive, so it's been a lot easier without a bunch of other people and their junk all over the place. I missed the big Obamessiah announcement speech in Springfield today (were Homer and Mayor Quimby there?), but reader and blogger Laura noted some highlights for me: The announcement today was filled with verbal gaffes such as Obama introducing Biden as "the next President" and Biden referring to his running mate as "Barack America." It's going to be an interesting fall. That it is. Once I get back to the hotel I'll take a look at the rest of the news items (I'm using my daughter's internet connection right now).

As you can see, we now have internet access. Life is good again . . . we have tossed aside our mental crutches and can now bound blithely through the interwebs. Here are some early observations from Week #1. In the past, my mind punctuated major changes with a single vivid dream — my subconscious packing its [...]

Twenty-plus phone calls later, we’ve seen two rentals today. TWO. Fortunately, they’re both acceptable (they have AC and they take cats). The place in Windsor is pricier and has a longer commute time; the place in Rohnert Park is less expensive but it’s a two story. Maybe we’ll find something tomorrow which has it all, [...]

Colin and I went back to Scandia Family Fun center in Rohnert Park where he found the go carts so fun that we had to go back. We grabbed some lunch on the way at Boat House Sushi . The signage for the restaurant was on the road, and Colin was so eager to get going after lunching, that I didn't walk around the building to capture it. However, the photo above is the entrance to the restaurant. Our meals began with a crisp salad and some unremarkable, lukewarm miso soup. We also ordered some edamame for the table, which was fine. Colin enjoyed his 'Flava Flav' roll which had spicy tuna (or salmon) in it, and a unique dipping sauce. Dad had a two item obento combo - chicken teriyaki and vegetable tempura. He cleaned his plate so you know it was good. I had the three item combo, which consisted of a California Roll, Teriyaki Salmon and Scallops Frits. It was fresh and well executed. The service was prompt and friendly as well, so I would not hesitate to come again when I'm in the neighborhood. And maybe the miso will be hotter next time.
