Steve Kerr Honors Terry Porter (Blazers Edge)

Last week I was all set to post the latest installment of Honor Terry Porter when someone had to go and get injured and then go and get surgery . I won't name names here, but it threw my whole swag off. I was unswagged. Deswagged? Swagless. In any event, Sean at Oregonlive had some audio from a recent episode from 95.5's "Wheels after Work" in which Brian Wheeler and Kenny Vance interview Phoenix Suns General Manager Steve Kerr. Sure they talked about Darius and some other shiny subjects but the question and answer that jumped out to me was, of course, Kenny's question about the Terry Porter hiring. Back in May when I constructed my Jersey Retirement Formula , I came up with 5 categories for judging a player's worth to an organization. The fifth category, let me remind you, was about "The Intangibles." This section takes into account the player's personality, contributions to the community and investment in the organization. Ask yourself, "Is the player a credit to the organization, the city and the league?" To me, and to many of you, this is where TP30 really hits a home run. But don't take my word for it, here's what Steve Kerr had to say about his new coach... "Well I know that people who followed Terry in Portland over the years know exactly why I picked him as our coach. He's just an incredibly class human being, first of all. A great guy. Somebody who I was teammates with in San Antonio for two seasons. So I got to know Terry very well. Once everything went down with Mike D'Antoni, and my search began, Terry was the first guy on my list just because of his experience in basketball and the type of person he is. How smart he is. What kind of leader he is. I felt like we got the best man for the job. I really liked the fact that he had a couple of years as a head coach in Milwaukee for experience purposes. You ask around the league about Terry and everybody raves about him. He's just the kind of person I want on my team. And I'm excited to have him." Back in May, I only awarded Terry 3 out of 5 points in this category. After listening to Steve's sweet talk, I think we can safely bump that up at least one notch. By all accounts (including Wheeler's), Kerr himself is one of the league's class acts so it's hard to imagine a more authoritative answer to the posed question, "Is he a credit to the organization, the city and the league?" You might be thinking, "What did you expect Steve to say? He hired Terry after all, of course he's going to say he's a great guy." Yeah, I get that. But get this: Steve Kerr hired him. The D'Antoni situation was messy; Steve was looking for reliability; and to whom did he look first? TP30. KP does not have a monopoly on emphasizing character when it comes to building a quality organization. Aging roster or not, I know Terry will be teaching and leading the way, with class, all season long. To a man like Kerr, that is worth its weight in gold. Steve said, "he's just the kind of person I want on my team. I say, "Terry is just the kind of person whose jersey should be hanging from the Rose Garden rafters." Blazers management: let's get 'er done. -- Ben ( benjamin.golliver@gmail.com ) PS Word is that Mr. Wheeler's surgery this morning was a success. Again, our thoughts go out to Mr. Wheeler and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Goran My Way? It’s Officially Kerr’s Club Now. (AZ Sports Hub)

Say this for Steve Kerr: he's knows how to make an impact. Just 14 months after assuming the mantle of Phoenix Suns' general manager and president of basketball operations, with the signing of Goran Dragic , he has remade the Suns in his own image. Franchise-altering mega-trade? Check. Hand-picked head coach? Check. Sacrificing athleticism and offense for role players and defense? Check. Betting the future on an unknown hand-picked foreigner? Check. It all seems to have happened so quickly, as if Kerr just pressed one of those "Easy" buttons from Staples. Trade a franchise player here, draft and sign a couple role players there, hire a head coach here and presto-change-o, it's a whole new Suns team taking the floor next season. If all this leads to a championship this season, who could blame Kerr for approaching the dais for his turn with the Larry O'Brien carrying his giant phantom huevos Sam Cassell-style ? He will have turned a Western Conference semi-finalist into a first round washout and back to contender in a little over 2 years. 7SOL will be become SSOL (Shawn's shit out of luck) and everyone will wonder whatever happened to that nice guy with the apostrophe in his name who always had his hand in his pocket on the sidelines. And if it doesn't? Well, though the Suns are signing Dragic to a 3 year deal with team option for a 4th, I'd imagine that deal to come in around $2-3 million a year. Pretty cheap even if Dragic stinks like a Euro armpit. Furthermore, after riding out a couple of mediocre seasons, everyone except for Diaw and Barbosa come off the books after the 2009-2010 season. In other words, barring complete disaster over the next 24 months, Sarver and Kerr get to push the "Reset" button. I bet the Knicks wish they could have said that 14 months into Isiah's Reign of Terror. If Kerr has chosen to fly too close to the sun as a first time GM, he's certainly set himself up for a soft landing. The luxury of knowing that if he doesn't land with the Suns, his fall will be broken by giant pile of TNT's cash can't hurt either. Fortunately for the franchise, with the notable exception of the D'Antoni departure (which I could never quite tell whether it was acrimonious or amicable), he's done all this with the same amount of fanfare as a man backing out of his driveway. It's all been just another day at the office for the former Wildcat. All of which is fitting for a guy who's spent his career under level heads from Lute Olson (old, ring-winning Lute, not new, nutty, tabloid-divorce Lute) to Phil Jackson to Greg Popovich. Right or wrong, he knows the results will speak for themselves. As Phoenix Stan noted in the comments to the fanshot below, we've already played the "Genius or Moron?" game once with Kerr and it didn't end so well. But last year, it was possible to lay some of the blame at the feet of a stubborn if successful head coach. With a full season, a full roster and full coaching staff of his choosing this season it might be less "genius or moron" and more "my way or the highway" for Steve Kerr.

Conversation with a Lakers Fan (AZ Sports Hub)

So while we were on our way to the basketball court, my best friend and I were talking about different things; work, wives, gas prices. Both of us are really passionate about basketball and the teams we root for, so we try to avoid the basketball topic unless it involves talking about a missed lay up or a crucial turnover in the pick up game we just played. Since the Olympics spirit is in the air, (and because there was a lot of traffic) we started talking about Team USA. One thing led to another and found ourselves arguing about the Suns and Lakers. This is a transcript of what I remember: PanamaSun: You got lucky when you got Gasol. Otherwise your season would have ended in the exact same way that ours did. Or even worse, maybe you would have not made it to the playoffs. Sergio: Man, you know, that’s exactly why we hate your guts so much. You think that everything has to do with luck, your team is full of excuses, and your coach was full of excuses. You think that getting Gasol was luck? You could have gotten him also; you would have had your precious and very much needed big man. Where was Steve Kerr? If you would have traded the Matrix for Gasol straight up, everyone would have been happy. But then you would have lost to the Spurs again! And the cycle would have started all over…excuses, excuses and more excuses. PanamaSun : and you should know about excuses right? ‘Cause the best player in your team is full of it. He whined and whined because he couldn’t win with the Lakers roster. He said that Bynum needed to step up, and that he wanted to be traded if the front office didn’t get someone to help him, he is a Douche bag and you know it! Sergio : He is a douche bag alright, but he is also a proven champion, he knows what it tastes to be on top. Can you blame him for wanting some help?.. Whining…HAHA, don’t even get me started on that, because you guys are know to be the biggest crybabies in the NBA. “Ohh we got screwed up by the refs, suspensions were unfair, Tim Donaghy was involved in game 3, David Stern hates the Suns and loves the Spurs, Amare was injured, Grant was injured, Bowen is dirty, and I can go on and on. You guys make fun of clipper fans and you are just the same. The truth is, your team has never been good enough, they are mentally weak and mental weakness is something that you can’t afford when competing at a high level. You know that better than me. We went on and on, until we finally arrived and surprisingly, we played well together. So, my fellow Sun’s Fans: Are we Crybabies? We can’t deny the fact that we have been labeled as “whiners” around the internet. Maybe we tend to blame (almost unconsciously) other circumstances instead of our own players and coaching staff. Could that be true? Are the Basketball Gods against the Phoenix Suns? Or is it simply that we are not good enough?
