No ugly duckling phase for these Russian supermodels apparently! The September 2008 issue of Vogue Russia cleverly juxtaposed current photos (taken by photographer Terry Tsiolis) and childhood photos (sent in by the girls' parents) of the Russian greats like Sasha, Natalya, Snejana, Anna and all those names ending in "a"!
Melanie Swan : Human augmentation via bacterial biome (advanced nanotechnology)

An excellent idea featured at Melanie Swan's blog: there are 1,000 trillion bacteria that are part of each human (10x the number of human cells) could be an ideal augmentation substrate. There are at least three ways for achieving human-electronic interfaces; physical implants, wearables and a third as yet unconsidered possibility, exploiting the human bacterial biome. There are 500 to 1000 classes of bacteria. Bacteria can be upgraded and functionalized for various augmentation purposes. 1. Add computer memory to bacteria or nanobot bacteria equivalents. 2. Add computer processing to bacteria. 3. Create respirocyte like capabilities [supply extra oxygen to the body] 4. Provide energy generation or energy storage [chemical for the body or electrical for cyborg systems] 5. Provide sensor functions or carry other electronics From Melanie Swan: Easy upgrade and maintenance The continual turnover, ingress and egress of bacteria in humans means that upgrade cycles and retirement of dead or non-functioning elements could occur seamlessly. Bacterial updates could be printed regularly from a 3d printer or automatically dispensed in smarthome air or water. Mechanically, the updates might be delivered through the air, in the shower, or by a nutrient blanket during sleep. Nanobot intermediaries Enhancing the human bacterial biome would really just be extending the life support functionality it already provides and could be a nice intermediary step to the more robust bionanodevices and nanobots envisioned in molecular manufacturing. Existing bacteria could be enhanced, much of the human microflora does not appear to be doing anything anyway, or additional bacteria could be engineered and brought on board.

Eliezer Yudkowsky has published Cognitive biases potentially affecting judgment of global risks , an excellent explanation of the various psychological errors of judgement human beings commonly commit (like availability bias, hindsight bias, black swan discounting, conjunction fallacy, confirmation bias, anchoring, adjustment and contamination, the affect heuristic, scope neglect, calibration and overconfidence, bystander apathy), including of course, when we are investing. He hopes such errors by decision-makers won't result in the extinction of humanity, noting that the size of the stakes don't affect the quality of people's judgement! The paper offers no "5 simple steps" regimen for over-coming such errors - it merely states that being aware of the errors is at least a start to committing them less often. There is a danger in trying to avoid all errors - you may be paralyzed with indecision and drive yourself nuts in the process. As General George Patton Jr said, " A good plan executed today is better than a perfect plan executed at some indefinite point in the future. " (see Military Quotes ) I found this paper on the Overcoming Bias website, which is devoted to intellectual discourse on aligning belief with reality using "Cognitive psychology, evolutionary psychology, microeconomics, applied statistics, social psychology, probability and decision theory, even a bit of Artificial Intelligence now and then." Good for fun and some learning.

Cormorants all in a row (A Snail's Eye View)

No swans at the Swan Bay jetty this afternoon but plenty of little pied cormorants. At one point, there must have been a hundred or more of them lined up along the railing but then someone walked past and they all took off. The someone was an elderly woman on her afternoon constitutional. She stopped to ask 'Have you ever seen so many shags in one place?' I had to think about that. They settled on an abandoned trailer and boats moored in the shallow waters. The little pieds shared the boats with the more retiring little black cormorants. I wouldn't want the job of cleaning off the guano. Could this be the origin of the term 'poop deck'? Less numerous than the cormorants but nonetheless holding their own were silver gulls, Caspian terns and crested terns. Caspian tern Crested tern White-fronted chats foraged in the saltmarsh, invariably just that little bit too far away for a good photo. The orange-bellied parrots, if they were around, were keeping a low profile. Where the orange-bellied parrots weren't So this is another place to add to my list of spots to visit again soon. At this rate, I'll never get to new locations but will be doing an endless round of the old ones. A bit like painting the Sydney Harbour Bridge ...
