Churches Preach for a 'Yes' Vote on Gay Marriage Ban (LAist)

Cupcakes from West Hollywood's Wedding Park Day ( more photos here ) | Photo by Tom Andrews/LAist Remember when the IRS investigated All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena for a sermon that they thought might void the church's tax-exempt status due to political endorsement during the 2004 Presidential Race (it was a What Would Jesus Do if he were Bush or Kerry on the war)? Now churches in California, including one nonprofit, are using their pulpits as political platforms against Propositions 4 and 8 , the abortion and gay marriage state props that are scheduled to appear on November's ballot. The Gay & Lesbian Times reports : James Dobson’s Focus on the Family, a group that has nonprofit status and allows contributors to deduct contributions from federal taxes, has raised $336,000 of the $2.3 million that groups opposed to same-sex marriage have donated to support Proposition 8, the Nov. 4 ballot initiative banning same-sex marriage, according to the Los Angeles Times. The president of the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) issued a letter last Sunday “from the pulpit” urging members to donate “means and time” to pass Proposition 8. Pastor Jim Garlow of the 2,500-member Skyline Church in San Diego, recently convened a conference call in which “more than 1,000 ministers, most from evangelical congregations, discussed tactics for passing [Proposition 8].” Now, the question is, will the IRS investigate these churches too?

Countdown to a SAG Strike? Studios Prepare (LAist)

From a SAG Rally earlier this month ( more photso here ) | Photo by Tom Andrews/LAist Movie studios are preparing for the worst, an actors strike, which could begin in July if contract talks go sour, according to the LA Times : In anticipation of a possible actors strike, studios revamped their schedules last year so that most films would finish shooting by June 30. They've also virtually stopped greenlighting new movies, causing a sharp slowdown in production -- or a de facto strike -- that could drag on for months. Some executives speculate that the studios could push back start dates to early next year to hedge their bets However, 350 independent films have been given vouchers to continue filming. Over the weekend, a group of over 200 actors including Tom Hanks and Sally Field publicly supported AFTRA's contract, which SAG vehemently opposes . In regards to this and possibly more, Nikki Finke is working on some breaking news to be posted at some point. "What I am doing is putting the final touches on a SAG/AFTRA/AMPTP package of urgent news and information that Hollywood needs to absorb. For those who are impatient for the posts, please understand that they represent a lot of research and analysis and fact-checking. Just know I'm working around-the-clock." She warned of this on Monday and we're all still waiting, patiently.

Water Ice Found on Mars (LAist)

Dr. Randii Wessen, a program system engineer at NASA, holds a globe of mars where at the top in the northern hemisphere, a yellow square marks the landing area of the Phoenix Lander where ice water was found. | Photo by Tom Andrews/LAist This just in from the Mars Phoenix Lander's Twitter at 5:15 p.m.: "Are you ready to celebrate? Well, get ready: We have ICE!!!!! Yes, ICE, *WATER ICE* on Mars! w00t!!! Best day ever!!" It was just two days ago that media outlets were reporting that there were no signs of water yet . Then nine minutes after that: "Whoohoo! Was keeping my eye on some chunks of bright stuff & they disappeared! Sublimated! So it can't be salt, it's ice." "It must be ice," said Phoenix Principal Investigator Peter Smith of the University of Arizona, Tucson. "These little clumps completely disappearing over the course of a few days, that is perfect evidence that it's ice. There had been some question whether the bright material was salt. Salt can't do that." The chunks were left at the bottom of a trench informally called "Dodo-Goldilocks" when Phoenix's Robotic Arm enlarged that trench on June 15, during the 20th Martian day, or sol, since landing. Several were gone when Phoenix looked at the trench early today, on Sol 24. [ University of Arizona Mars Phoenix Mission ] Not only do we have ice on Mars, NASA has whole-heartedly used the 2007 Word of the Year -- w00t .
Keeping Gay Marriage Legal in California (LAist)

Photo taken yesterday at West Hollywood Park by Tom Andrews/LAist Now that same-sex marriage is here for a joyful four-point-five months before Californians determine the fate of the institution when voting on the California Marriage Protection Act in November , it's going to be a fight. Each poll varies on the outcome of what Californians think, but for the most part, results are negligible and the state seems split 50-50. KNBC's political commenter, Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, says the nation appears to be less negative to same-sex marriages and four years into Massachusetts' green light for gay couples, everything is fine ( as Jeffe says, "the state has yet to fall into the Atlantic Ocean). Mary McNamara at the LA Times noted that the coverage of yesterday's ceremonies across the state "were so uniform in their well-wishing tameness that they bordered on dull. Short-and-sweet interviews with the newly married made the top of the network news at 5, but the topic was regularly trumped on talk shows like 'The View' and local afternoon news hours by recent studies about the importance of sleep and the health benefits of drinking coffee." Protestors yesterday at West Hollywood park were kept to a handful of quiet people. In San Francisco, opposition was much louder .
