Zanu Accuses Tsvangirai of Disrespecting Mbeki (Daniel Molokele)

By Thulasizwe Simelane Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF has accused opposition Movement of Democratic Change (MDC) leader Morgan Tsvangirai of disrespecting the Southern African Development Community, (SADC) appointed mediator, President Thabo Mbeki. Tsvangirai yesterday failed to attend a meeting scheduled by Mbeki between his Zimbabwean counterpart Robert Mugabe and opposition leaders. Mbeki says Tsvangirai pulled out of the meeting at the last minute saying he had been advised by African Union (AU) leaders to hold off until Mbeki's mediation effort is reinforced. Meanwhile, a milestone moment occurred in Zimbabwean politics when Mugabe was seen shaking hands with MDC faction leader Arthur Mutambara. However, the picture would resonate even more, if the hand Mugabe shook was that of his arch-rival Morgan Tsvangirai. The leader of the bigger MDC faction apparently withdrew at the last minute from a meeting facilitated by Mbeki with Mugabe yesterday. The ruling party wasted no time in attacking Tsvangirai over his snub of the dialogue mediator. While some analysts say Tsvangirai let a golden opportunity slip to give the dialogue the momentum it needs, others believe his snub of Mbeki makes a powerful statement to the international community. * SABC

Last poster: Sam Banda Junior at 06-07-2008 19:06 Topic is Open South Africa’s President Thabo Mbeki who has been criticized highly for failing to mediate in Zimbabwe’s crisis held talks with president Robert Mugabe, the first of its kind since the disputed June 27 elections on Saturday. Mbeki held the unexpected meeting in the Zimbabwean capital, Harare with Mugabe and Arthur Mutambara, leader of the breakaway faction of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). However the South African president is said to have been disappointed by the failure of MDC’s leader Morgan Tsvangirai to attend the meeting. Mbeki is the chief Southern African Development Community (SADC) mediator in the Zimbabwe crisis, but he's been rejected by Tsvangirai’s MDC. According to an Sabcnews.com report Saturday, last week’s week's African Union summit resolved that Mbeki should try to broker a power-sharing deal in Zimbabwe. The June 27 controversial re-run elections saw Mugabe retaining the power in which the MDC leader pulled out. Tsvangirai won the first round of the elections on March 29 but he failed to attain the 50 percent majority. Meanwhile, according to the Sadcnews.com report, Congress of South African Trade Unions' demonstrations over the legitimacy of Mugabe's re-election ended at the Beit Bridge border post with Zimbabwe in Limpopo. The report said the demonstrators, mostly dressed in red, were holding placards denouncing Mugabe's government. The aim was to show solidarity with Zimbabweans. Cosatu spokesperson Jan Tsiane said the African Union, SADC and the International community must not recognise the Zimbabwean government led by Mugabe. Tsiane also called on Mugabe to disband the militias, stop harassing politicians and end censorship of the media. Supporters of the MDC in South Africa and Napwa were also present. The demonstrators dispersed under the watchful eye of the police." ]]>
