      <title>Yahrtzeit: remembering the hero, Yoni Netanyahu (Life in Israel)</title>

      <description>200 years after the independence of the United States of America had been made official, July 4, 1976, Israel conducted a daring operation in Africa to save Israeli hostages that had been taken during the hijacking of an Air France flight to Entebbe Airport in Uganda. The successful rescue operation, carried out despite the difficult conditions of being so far away from Israel, occurred on July 3 and 4. The leader of the elite unit that carried out the operation was Yoni Netanyahu . He was the only soldier to die in the operation, as despite being the commander of the unit, he put himself on the front line which was and is atypical of commanders, but was totally typical by the command of Yoni Netanyahu . I recently finished reading the book " The Letters of Jonathan Netanyahu ". I read it once as teenager and did not appreciate it then. I thought it boring, as it is a compilation of his personal letters, and not a biography or a war book. Re-reading it now though, I appreciated it more. It was fascinating to read his take on the times, the buildup to war, his personal relationships - how they developed and how they failed because of his dedication to the army and to Israel's security. While the 'secular' date of his death passed on Friday July 4th, the Hebrew date, 6 Tammuz, falls out this week on Wednesday. Yehi Zichro Baruch.</description>

      <description>For any part in any of the comments I wrote where I gave any impression AT ALL that there is anything unpatriotic or less than noble about SonlitKnight's devotion to the United States of America, I do indeed apologize. I also believe that The Knight is devoted to supporting the troops. He has given much time to working behind the scenes and on the domestic front lines, supporting the troops and ripping into the leftist scum within our country who seek to denigrate the honor of our US Military. Separate from this, however, is the fact that we know our heroes fighting overseas for freedom and liberty - ours and that of freedom loving people the world over - are shuddering at the mere thought of having to salute Barack Obama as Commander in Chief. We know this. This is not guesswork or conjecture. I therefore stand by the bottom line of the many posts and comments I have written, which is to say that our heroes in military uniform are hoping and praying that Americans will do what must be done to keep Barack Obama out of the White House. The only hope of that is to elect John McCain. This is not a game where we can wait until 2010 to do something about Barack Obama. The damage that can be done by socialists and communists in the democrat party over a short two year span is significant indeed. So without pointing any fingers at any one who believes differently, it is abundantly clear to me that beating Barack Obama equals supporting our fighting men and women in uniform. And the only candidate who can beat Obama is Senator John McCain. Thus, voting for John McCain is supporting the men and women of the Coast Guard, the Air Force, the Navy, the Army and the Marines.       <title>We the People (Got Boondoggle?)</title>

      <description>The preamble of the Constitution of the United States of America begins with one of the most powerful principles of our country, We the People. “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” In reflection this Independence Day, our country was founded on extremely high principles and values. Our founding fathers envisioned a country that could rise higher in its purpose, standing for truth, justice, freedom, democracy, equality and tolerance. We proclaimed our lofting ideas in the Declaration of Independence for the world to see - that every person enjoys a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Over the course of our nation’s history, we have found that our noble ideas are simple in word but hard to live up to. We have not always acted in a way that is described in our own inspired words. The journey is difficult by we keep trying as a nation to follow this path. Our lean journey is not unlike our nation’s journey. The high principles of the lean philosophy, like respect for people, are easier said than done. Respect for people is about treating others as we wish to be treated. Respect for people is focused on total employee involvement, team work, inclusion in meeting a higher purpose. We the people and respect for people appears to go hand in hand. When we refer to our nation, we mean all our citizens, just like when we refer to our company, we mean every employee. Our employees are the company. Sometimes we forget this and think of employees no different as our machines, to be used or discarded as needed all in the name of profit. Profit in itself is not evil however greed and power can blind us from our principles and values. As we return back to work, take a moment to reflect on our nations founding ideas and be thankful for our freedoms. For those of us on our lean journey, look to our lean principles and ask ourselves how we can better live up to them. Most importantly, do we say we believe in respect for people but fall short in our daily actions and decisions? How much better could we build our company and our nation if we could improve our actions in line with our inspired ideas and principles? It all begins with “We the People.”</description>

      <title>A New Era in Gun Freedom This 4th of July (A Keyboard and a .45)</title>

      <description>One highlight of the NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits was the opportunity to meet and spend some time with Paul Helinski, the force behind GunsAmerica . Paul has a message for gunnies on Independence Day: Hi Everyone, Today we celebrate our country, The United States of America. We are the greatest nation that has ever been, period. We stand for freedom. Freedom isn't free. We owe the freedom that we live in to the brave men and women in uniform here and abroad who protect what others would take away from us. Please remember to thank them in the midst of your 4th celebrations. This past week the United States Constitution spoke, and yes, our 2nd Amendment Right reached a new stature when the United States Supreme Court said very plainly that guns are an individual right. If you went to the NRA show you probably came home with one of our bumper stickers declaring this. But the Constitution did not speak by itself. The NRA, Gun Owners of America, the state gun owner groups, individual gun clubs, JFPO and other smaller gun rights groups made this happen. For years they have not only pushed for pro-gun justices, pro-gun politicians and paid for pro-gun lobbyists, they have also helped to educate the next generation of shooters. These people will grow to be the next generation of voters, campaign coffers, politicians and even media people. Already the gun grabbers have a next plan of attack. We surmised long ago (the Heller case was un-losable) that it would be taxing and regulating gun dealers, and of course, getting rid of gun shows. For that reason we feel that as a gun community we should all support our stocking dealers. I am personally a lifetime customer of Kittery Trading Post in Maine and I buy my guns at retail, mostly from them (and no they don't have a history of being big GA advertisers). We have created a whole suite of services for stocking dealers and we urge you to share them with your favorite gun shop. Without these tools to connect them to the next generation of gun buyers we feel that the next wave of taxes and hoops to jump through will make many of them close down. Help them, and by helping them you will help gun freedom survive in our country. And he certainly is not a man I would trust with my back in a fight. The gun grabbers are excited because they think the right wingers are going to stay away from the polls. They are wrong! We are going to vote, and we are going to vote for John McCain. Don't forget your state races too. There are some great people out there in trouble, like John Sununu from my native NH. He lived not ten miles from me for many years and he's a good guy we always can count on as gun owners.       <title>This Year, We Get Two Fourth Of Julys at Rather Than Working (Rather Than Working)</title>

She seems to be what I was talking about in the positive part of my last post. On becoming a citizen of the United States of America Two days ago there were one thousand nine hundred and eleven of us at the ceremony. We represented 110 of the 195 established countries of this world. We were all ages, all stages of life between the young and the old, all conditions of living between the healthy and the infirm, all the mirrored disparity of the affluent and the poor.Our skins reflected the gamut of our racial spectrum. Our attire reflected the respect which we'd thought to bring to this day. We came in the company of our families, by the hands of our husbands, holding on to our wives, flanked by our children, supported by our close friends. It was a day marked by an atmosphere of expectancy and of relief. It was grounded in the sensation of imminent completion, in the anticipation of an awaited final step in the road to naturalization.There were flags painted on the walls, anchored ceremonially in the stands that stood on the auditorium floor, there were representations in plastic and balsa of the most conspicuous symbol of Americanism, held in our waving hands. In lapels I saw small metallic likenesses of the bald eagle, a dollar bill, red and blue stars; someone sported an I am an American pin, God Save the USA even read the ink of one man's tattooed arm. For the long hours of wait until the ceremony of oath-taking took place, a musical potpourri of John Philip Sousa marches and Louis Armstrong singing What a Wonderful World had been put together before the rousing impulse of Anchors Aweigh gave way to yet another repeat of the moving America the Beautiful . I have no idea what the cheesy theme song from the movie Dirty Dancing was doing in the play roster but what it lacked in patriotic credentials was more than compensated by the mental distraction of its sing-along charm. Concession stands sold the most American of food fares: hot dogs, hamburgers, fries with ketchup, sodas and, because this is Texas, there were breakfast burritos; and because this is the US, the little girl said, "they don't taste as good as McDonalds mommy," and because I have yet to taste a McDonalds burrito, I could neither confirm nor deny the veracity of her discerning taste. When the judge officiating this ritualistic induction into the privileges of US citizenship walked into the room, we all rose except for those too frail or too sick to stand. Amongst them, Lorenzo Medina, aged 95, who sat in a wheelchair while his granddaughter held a home-made sign with the words Congratulations! and Finally! stenciled in black for all to understand the longed for arrival of this day in her grandfather's life.An honor guard of four boy scouts, the youngest of which had a brother and a father becoming citizens in this particular ceremony, marched to the center of the floor from where they saluted the judge and then the sole INS lawyer who was there to represent our collective interests before finally turning to us, the audience of applicants. This courtesy they gave felt symbolic, fraught with the intangibleness of a moment that never banked on its power, nor the emotion it did not know it could engender. Many teared up at this small token of pomp. It felt cosmic in the way that cosmic happenings seem to have no reason because they just simply are. Afterwards, we all sang the National Anthem. All together we pledged allegiance to the Flag. As one voice we renounced our previous nationalities and promised to protect, honor, defend and obey the Constitution of the United States. We swore we would bear arms for our adoptive country. We said it would be our privilege to do so and just like that, after all the swearing and pledging, it was suddenly done.Invisibly, we were now citizens who were readying to empty a large stadium, citizens who were receiving an official document to confirm the validity of our changed state. Citizens who climbed into their cars to go home to the routine of those same days we lived in before we were made - citizens. Citizens because the judge said so and because his word is the law.In my car seat, I sat staring at my shiny certificate. It told me nothing new, I felt nearly the same even as I understood that this proof of my citizenship proved something to others, rather than to me. That's because, for many a year, I have been a non-official citizen of this country as much as I will always be an official citizen of the Panama that saw me born. I do not need a paper to remind me of those truths the way I do not need a sworn oath to make me be faithful to the honorable freedoms and ideals I uphold because, I believe in them so. And yet, like Mr. Medina, I mentally tacked on a finally to this moment. After 23 years of living here as the daughter of a diplomat, as an international worker and a married resident, I am now finally, a citizen in my own right rather than a sanctioned dweller. There is a resolution of sorts within that journey if only because it marks the official end of my being considered a foreigner in this land I call my home. I celebrate that important shift in perception on this Fourth of July day. I hope it was a good one for you also. A safe Independence Day to all of you, no matter in what country you may be.       <description>Yesterday was, as I'm sure you are aware by now, the Independence Day Holiday, celebrated on July the Fourth every year in the United States of America. The holiday celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence , a singular document by which the United States declared their independence from Great Britain to the world. As my father reminded me yesterday though, the Continental Congress actually declared independence two days earlier when the Lee Resolution was adopted by twelve of the thirteen colonies. Only New York didn't vote. The Lee Resolution, put forward by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia began… Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved. Note the usage of the word State here. Two days later when the Declaration of Independence was signed the Congress of the United States declared that [T]hese United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. So the fourth of July isn't really the anniversary of the birth of a nation. It's the anniversary of the birth of thirteen of them. Or, perhaps, it's really the second of July that we should be celebrating. …Nah! That would leave New York out of the party. Myself, I wait until September 17th every year to celebrate the true birth of our Nation. On that day , the Constitutional Convention finished its work and signed the Constitution for the United States of America. Or maybe we really should celebrate on the second of July after all… The Lee Resolution was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 2, 1776, declaring the United Colonies to be free and independent States. On July 2, 1788 , news of the ratification of the Constitution by New Hampshire reached the Confederation Congress in New York. New Hampshire was the ninth State to ratify the Constitution. Since there were thirteen states, and since three quarters of them were required to ratify the Constitution for it to be adopted, July 2, 1788 marked the first day of operation of our new Constitutional Republic when the Confederation Congress formed a committee "for putting the said Constitution into operation." The second of July. Now that's a good day to celebrate.       <description>As you surely know by now, we are taking a brief break here at UF to enjoy the 4th of July festivities. Why did I write this post, then? Mind your own business, you ingrate! I simply thought that, in light of the wonderousness that is the United States of America, I would take some time out to opine on the boys that will be representing us next month in Beijing at the 2008 Summer Olympic games . Who are these courageous lads, who will brave smog , food poisoning , and being spat upon by old Chinese women? Join me after the jump to find out. Well, hurry up - you can stare at her later. Besides, it's not even proper etiquette to wear the US flag. She should probably take those off. So, the lads are off to Beijing in a short while to compete against the best in the world in the 2008 Summer Olympics. What's that? Oh, well, yes. Technically it's true that these are U-23 teams so there will be some exciting players missing. And some countries don't care about the Olympics since they are more focused on World Cup 2010 qualifiers and the beginning of various domestic league seasons. So why should you watch? Patriotism, dammit! The US was drawn into Group B with Japan, the Netherlands, and Nigeria. Interested in watching the games? We are playing Japan on August 7th at 5AM (yes, in the morning), the Netherlands on August 10th at 7:45AM, and Nigeria on August 13th at 5AM. Set the DVR! The 18-man roster is not due until July 23rd, so these are some predictions for what that team might look like.       <title>Happy Independence Day from a Daughter of the New American Revolution (Last Left Turn Before Hooterville)</title>

      <description>Greetings, freedom-lovers everywhere! Welcome to the last Fourth of July that will be sullied by this evil and putrid Administration. I plan to use this day to think about what the founders of our nation sacrificed to bring forth the United States of America, and why they decided it was worth putting everything they had on the line to break free from tyranny. Many of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence lost their health, money, property, and families because they chose to challenge the status quo. I will be thinking in particular of the last man to put his signature to that document, Matthew Thornton . My paternal grandmother always asserted that we were related to him in some way, but the connection was somewhat hazy. She thought that the first McCracken (my maiden name) to come over from Scotland married Dr. Thornton's daughter, but a quick scan of the history books put the kibbosh on that, so I thought it was more wishful thinking than anything else. However, once I got hooked a couple of months ago on my new crack, Ancestry.com, I found that although we were not directly descended from Thornton, we were indeed related - my great-great-grandfather George Washington McCracken's wife Mary Edgerly Thornton was the great-great-granddaughter of William Thornton, brother of Matthew Thornton. I wish my grandmother had lived long enough to find that out (although she was alive both times the Red Sox won the World Series!) It's a revelation to go back and read the history of the Revolution within the context of having a relative involved, and realizing how determined these men (and women) were to forge their own destiny, and fight their oppressors. Matthew Thornton was born in Ireland of Scottish descent; the Scots-Irish (Northern Ulster Presbyterians or 'Orangemen' as they were known, to differentiate them from Celtic Irish Catholics) who came to America around that time were fiercely committed to the cause of independence. His father James Thornton brought his young family to America in 1718, settling in Brunswick, Maine; on July 11th, 1722, a band of Native Americans attacked the town. The Thornton family fled from their burning home and escaped by canoe. Narrowly escaping death they made their way initially to Casco Bay Maine. From there they moved to the Scots-Irish settlement of Worcester, Massachusetts, where my father's people have lived ever since. From an article by Alister J. McReynolds: In Worcester Matthew Thornton received a classical education at the Worcester Academy. The family subsequently left Worcester as a result of the bad treatment meted out to the Scots Irish of the town by the Congregationalist Puritan burghers. Matthew Thornton completed his studies in Medicine in Leicester and then in 1740 opened up his medical practice in Londonderry New Hampshire. This proved to be a position which was financially lucrative and Thornton became a wealthy citizen. Londonderry was relatively small at this time but by 1775 it had grown to become the second largest town in New Hampshire in both populationand taxable wealth. In 1745, five years after he had hung out his Doctor’s slate in Londonderry, Matthew Thornton was still a bachelor and decided to volunteer his services as a military surgeon on the ‘Fort Louisburg’ expedition to Cape Breton. This was a major British campaign against the French and ended with the taking of the aforementioned French fort at the mouth of the St Lawrence waterway.During this campaign Matthew Thornton’s skill as a surgeon was particularly noted. In spite of the magnitude of the operation, consequent from the fighting only 6 lives were lost on the British side. After this ‘tour of duty’ Matthew Thornton returned home to Londonderry New Hampshire where he remained in the local militia and eventually in 1775 received a commission as a Colonel from Governor Wentworth. Realistically however at 61 he was too old for active service. We have descriptions of Dr Matthew Thornton in 1750’s which portray him as tall, clear-eyed and handsome and added to this possessing a charm and storytelling capability that kept his friends enthralled for hours on end. Matthew Thornton was 46 years of age when he married Hannah Jack in 1760 and the couple were to have five children*. From the outset Thornton took an active part in the overthrow of the British governance in New Hampshire and was prominent in his opposition to the Stamp Act. In 1768 Matthew Thornton and the other members of his family were granted the township which still bears his name – Thornton. In 1775 Matthew Thornton was elected President of the Convention and over the next decade held a series of positions as Chairman of committees and President of the Constitutional Convention. Subsequently he became President of the fifth Congress which adopted the first Constitution of the Colonies on January 5th 1776. He also chaired the 5 man committee which drafted the document. Although not elected until November 4th 1776 and thus after the passage of the Declaration of Independence, Matthew Thornton was allowed to sign the engrossed copy of the document. He had attested and it had been fully accepted that retrospectively he was fully in accordance with the voting on the issue. Thornton arrived in Philadelphia just one day before he signed the Declaration and commenced his two year stint in Congress. Some 18 months prior to his arrival in Philadelphia Matthew Thornton had written a letter to Congress advocating complete independence from Great Britain. This was a view that was not universally supported at the time. However by November 1776 it was the almost unanimous viewpoint of the activists in the Colonies. *A story told in the History of New Boston NH states, "she was a beautiful young girl of eighteen (when they married), whom he had promised, when a child, to wait for and marry, as a reward to her taking some disagreeable medicine." In a book written about the signers in 1823, the section on Matthew Thornton ends thusly: The grave of this eminent man is covered by a white marble slab, upon which arc inscribed his name and age, with the brief but noble epitaph— "AN HONEST MAN." I hope that we can take heart and courage from the example that our founding fathers gave us, and I hope that we can find the fortitude to do whatever is necessary to keep that flame of freedom burning. Are we, like they, ready to "pledge our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor"? If not, we may find that most or all of it will be taken from us anyway.</description>
