With the 4th of July celebration right around the corner," the use of fireworks in the foothills is a serious threat," stated Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit Chief, Brad Harris. "We are urging all residents and visitors alike to act responsibly and legally if they use fireworks." Once again this year, there is ZERO tolerance for anyone discharging State Fire Marshall approved, "Safe & Sane" fireworks in "banned areas" or for any use or possession of illegal fireworks.

Firefighters have set up a temporary plant in Bear Valley near Highway 20 to mix fire retardant for use on the Yuba River Complex fires. The plant mixes dry fire retardant (an orange-colored powder with a fertilizer base) and water in a 12,000-gallon tank. The resulting substance is immediately pumped into a 6,000 gallon "dip tank". This looks like a large orange-colored wading pool that's easy for pilots to see. The crew is careful to only fill the tank to 5,000 gallons in order to minimize spillage when the bucket is dipped into the tank.

The Salmonid Restoration Federation (SRF) and South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) are producing the event, which includes a full day Symposium on Thursday July 10th exploring the challenges and opportunities for recovering California's Spring-Run Chinook salmon - historically the most abundant salmon run in California and currently threatened with extinction. The symposium will be followed by field tours on Friday and Saturday, July 11-12 to provide first-hand investigations of important restoration projects and opportunities demonstrating how the Yuba River is central to the recovery of the San Francisco Bay Watershed's collapsing wild salmon populations.
