Five years of blogging has brought Jeff Ooi a measure of notoriety. His biting posts on Malaysian politics sparked police investigations. A pro-government newspaper sued him for libel. A prominent politician compared bloggers to monkeys in a lawless jungle. In January, as Malaysia braced for national elections, a new banner went up on his blog (www.jeffooi.com): Get [...]

I read on the BBC that "Former London mayor Ken Livingstone is to work as a consultant for Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Mr Livingstone, who has long been a supporter of Mr Chavez, will advise pro-government mayors in the capital Caracas on urban planning." Ken Livingstone is to work as a consultant to someone who tried to change the electoral system to his advantage. Ken Livingstone is to work as a consultant to a tyrant who supports terrorism in neighbouring states via groups such as FARC and who proclaimed his "brotherhood" with Saddam Hussein and bestowed kind words on the Taliban. Ken Livingstone is to work as a consultant to a man who maintains close economic and diplomatic ties with the leaders of Iran and Libya. How do you sleep at night, Ken Livingstone?

As Pam noted, she and Terrance and Autumn use the Blend's credentials to attend stimulating and provocative presentations and workshops in comfortably-appointed air-conditioned hotel conference rooms. Meanwhile, I'm capturing the flavor of the convention outside amongst the hoi polloi in 90+ Denver heat. I'm a bit sunburned and very exhausted, but this was worth it! As I rode my free bike around Downtown Denver (see update to Julien's post below) I found some of the fun groups gathered for the convention. The "Stop the Torture" demonstration down at the park. One of the under-dressed and under-epuipped police at the convention center making sure the free speech doesn't lead to violence, alongside one of the NARAL volunteers countering this kind of crap (pic after jump so you don't have to see an aborted fetus if you don't want to...) There were two or three of these signs down at the convention center with self-righteous Men of God talking about how Obama supports the killing of babies and various men and women shouting back at them. You know the scene - lots of yelling. So I stood there, filming one, and I rose my hand. When he paused, I asked, "Could I ask a question, and I really do respect your right to disagree and speak out..." After being yelled at so long, I think that calm tack worked. He put down his bullhorn and said, "go ahead, ask." "Earlier in your speech, you said abortion is murder of a baby. Supposing you get your wish and abortion is re-criminalized, should a woman who aborts her baby be subject to capital punishment?" This fundie answered no, but his eyes revealed that I had him a bit flustered. I continued, "So, why then would you support the death penalty for the murderer of a five year old girl, but not for the murderer of a five-month-old womb-baby, to use your terminology? It seems to me you really do think abortion is a lesser crime than murder." Later I had wandered off and a very estute young African-American gentleman was debating, quite respectfully, this same fundie. I walked over just as our AA man was asking the crowd, "Hey, everybody raise your hands if you wanna kill a baby/ See, no hands!" At this point, fundie tries to pull the "Margaret Sanger was a racist and Planned Parenthood wants to lead a black genocide through aborting li'l black babies!" card. I interrupted, "Excuse me, is it your position that the first African-American candidate for president supports exterminating his own race?" Young AA man high-fives me and younger girls surrounding us start to laugh. Fundie tries to avoid the question, but young AA man says, "hey, answer his question" and that's where I left them. I got to another fundie with the "capital punishment for abortion" point. This one actually said he would put the mother to death if she aborted a pregnancy. I asked if she had an abortion doctor, would he be an accessory to capital murder, and thus also subject to capital punishment? Yes, he replied. "So it seems to me that my pro-choice position, in your opinion, results in the death of one, and your pro-life position results in the death of three. Interesting." There is a whole lot more that you'll just have to catch in the YouTube videos when I have a chance to capture, edit, and upload them back home next week.
