Michael Shaw: Reading The Pictures: The Dynamics Of Tuzla

Obviously, visuals can be highly damaging to a candidate, such as the mild images of Hillary at the Tuzla airport after she spoke of being greeted by gunfire. However, we don't often break down why. In this case: 1. The latter shot evokes the image of the threatened young children asleep in Clinton's 3AM "Who Can You Rely On?" ad. What the Tuzla imbroglio does is to raise the question whether Hillary -- upon receipt of that 3 AM call -- wouldn't have trouble accurately interpreting the level of danger to these young innocents. 2. These pictures uncover something of a paranoid streak. The "dramatically non-threatening" scenes undermine the argument Hillary makes that she is constantly under (political) enemy attack. 3. Whereas Chelsea has emerged this year in the role of Hillary's soul-sister, as well as someone who reinforces and insulates the campaign on the gender front, these visuals also call Chelsea's integrity into question, and make her seem more like a political prop. 4. Hillary's over-dramatization of danger in a conflict setting can't help but bring to mind her validation of George Bush's over-dramatization of the threat of Iraqi WMD, and her consequent support of the Iraq war resolution. 5. The Tuzla images start to unwind a great deal of campaign work designed to frame Hillary as the more experienced candidate. In a curious line in the original CBS report in '96, reporter Cheryl Atkinson says: "Mrs. Clinton ... is well aware that she risks looking like she is trying to do the President's job." In the present context, these photos reinforce Clinton as the ambitious former first lady far more than potential Commander-in-Chief.
Greg Saunders: Hillary's Diversionary Tactic Is Feeding The GOP Noise Machine

Apparently being caught lying on your resume brings out the venomous side in Sen. Clinton. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, in a wide-ranging interview today with Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporters and editors, said she would have left her church if her pastor made the sort of inflammatory remarks Sen. Barack Obama's former pastor made. "He would not have been my pastor," Clinton said. "You don't choose your family, but you choose what church you want to attend." . . . The Clinton campaign had refrained from getting involved in the Wright controversy, but Clinton herself, responding to a question this morning, denounced what she said was "hate speech." The problem for Hillary is that this plays into the larger metanarrative about her campaign, that she'll do or say anything to get elected. She's smart enough to realize that dragging the Rev. Wright matter back into the news makes her look petty and despicable, but in the end it's probably the best option she has for two reasons. For one, slinging mud out of sheer desperation reinforces a negative perception, but it's a more favorable one than the emerging storyline that she's a chronic liar whose falsehoods cut to the very notion of her campaign strategy that she's more "experienced" (Never mind the fact that were she to be judged by her own definition of "experience", she'll lose to John McCain in November). Moreover, for a lot of Clinton's supporters, her willingness to engage in character assassination is considered an asset in November. For Obama supporters, this makes her look like an asshole, but Clinton's base (the "fight fire with fire" wing of the DNC) will see this as another example of her being "tough". Of course, the other upside for Clinton is that in distracting attention away from embarrassing news, she refocuses attention on the emerging right-wing meta-narrative that Barack Obama is unpatriotic. This has been the thread that unites many of the right-wing smears against Obama, from the "lapel pin" fla

Broadcasting platform : YouTube
Source : The Huffington Post
Discovery Date : 18/03/2008 18:21
Number of articles : 230

Robert Creamer: A New Iconic Moment for Bush -- Giving Up Golf

The Bush Presidency can be viewed as America's eight year detour into a dark world, more reminiscent of the old movie "Road Warrior" than the American dream: a world of dog-eat-dog, survival-of-the-fittest domestic policy and "have gun will travel" foreign policy.

The signposts along that detour have been a series of iconic moments that will etch the Bush legacy indelibly into our memory. Who can forget Bush strutting across the carrier deck to deliver his "mission accomplished" speech five years ago; Bush's unforgettable "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job" to the FEMA Director that presided over the Katrina catastrophe; or the pictures of tortured prisoners at Abu Ghraib?

We all remember Bush's "negotiation" over oil prices with King Saud of Saudi Arabia. That's the one where Bush and Saud held hands.

Then there was Bush's reassurance that the health care system was fine. "Every one in America has access to health care," he said, "Just go to an emergency room."

Recently there have been Bush's repeated assurances that "the economy is good and strong."

To me, one of the most amazing iconic images of the Bush presidency was the
video clip
made famous by the film "Fahrenheit 9/11" of the president exhorting all nations "to do everything they can to stop these terrorist killers" and then telling the reporters with him to "watch this drive".

Well yesterday, the President created another iconic memory of the Bush legacy: he revealed he
gave up golf
for the duration of the War in Iraq. .

"I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the Commander-in-Chief playing golf. I feel I owe it to the families to be as - to be in solidarity as best as I can with them," he said. "And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal."

According to Nobel Prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, Bush's War in Iraq will cost American tax payers $3 trillion. It has cost the lives of over 4,000 men and women and seriously injured almo

Broadcasting platform : YouTube
Source : The Huffington Post
Discovery Date : 14/05/2008 02:16
Number of articles : 9

Gates demos Touch Wall at CEO Summit

Initially it looked like the risky demo as Bill called it may not work but after a few touches, the wall came to life and Touch Wall was shown to 100 or so CEO’s at the 2008 CEO Summit . TechCrunch has more on this . Michael Arrington answers what I think is going to be the most obvious question: TouchWall and Plex are superficially similar to Microsoft Surface , a multi-touch table computer that was introduced in 2007 and which recently became commercially available in select AT&T stores. In a demo yesterday, though, Microsoft Office Labs GM Chris Pratley and Director of Envisioning Ian Sands said that the two products are completely different. Surface is a multi-touch and vision system that uses cameras to sense what is on the table, where it is and what it is doing. It can determine, for example, if a cell phone is on the table and then interact with the phone in a variety of ways, such as pulling photos off of it (see video here ). TouchWall is a fundamentally simpler mechanical system, and is also significantly cheaper to produce. While Surface retails at around $10,000, the hardware to “turn almost anything into a multi-touch interface” for TouchWall is just “hundreds of dollars” says Sands.

Broadcasting platform : YouTube
Source : MSDN Blogs
Discovery Date : 14/05/2008 18:16
Number of articles : 9
