And now for Three Small Outrages: One: On October 31, 2006, Jim Flaherty shocked a couple of million investors out of their shorts by dumping a 31% tax on income trusts. This was ten months after the Harper Conservatives won office by promising they’d never do such a thing. The reason given: If income trusts were [...]

Source : The Turner Report (subscribe)

Explore : Conservatives, Mortgages

It appears that the mismanagement of the federal government’s finances by Jim Flaherty and the Conservatives is well underway. I sure hope Canada isn’t about to go back into the red ink and a growing federal debt again. Under the previous Liberal government, tremendous progress was made toward creating budget surpluses and debt reduction. Flaherty [...]

Source : Progressive Bloggers (subscribe)

Explore : Canada, Conservatives, Government, Liberals, Saskatchewan

Harper runs a deficit - isn't this kind of a big deal? (Prairie Fire)

So it seems that Stephen Harper, Jim Flaherty, and the rest of the Conservative gang have managed to run over half a billion dollars in charges up on on the national credit card this past spring. And just to stick it to them, it seems that this is due primarily to the loss in revenue from the GST cuts. But here is what I don't get - why isn't the media making a bigger deal of this? I mean, hasn't...

Source : Prairie Fire (subscribe)

Explore : Conservatives

Today some more predictable news broke, as it was announced that the Conservatives ran a deficit in April and May of over $500 million. Yep, given Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's history in Ontario on this matter, everyone saw this one coming from a mile away.

You mean if you tax less and spend more, you're going to run a deficit? What a shock! All sarcasm aside, this is terrible news for the country. M. Dion we quite literally cannot afford another Conservative budget.

From the CBCThe federal government ran a deficit of $517 million over April and May, the first two months of the current fiscal year, mainly due to lower corporate income tax and GST revenues. (if this trend continue we could end up a 6 billion dollar Deficit)Over the same time period last year, the government ran a $2.8 billion surplus. The federal finance department said Friday that during this April...

Source : Progressive Bloggers (subscribe)

Explore : Canada, Government, Income tax, Ontario, Political Blogs
